With sleek aluminum skin and sturdy structure, the macally PHR-250CC external enclosure provides a safe, cool case for 2.5" internal IDE hard drives. It is versatile enough to operate smoothly with both PC and Macs, and includes two FireWire (IEEE 1394) ports so it can get daisy-chained with other drives. Connection options provide choices for optimum data transfer speeds.
Things inside are kept cool by the aluminum body substituting as a heat sink, and your data truly portable, because you can move it from computer to computer without rebooting, thanks to plug-and-play and hotswapable operation. LEDs indicate power and operation status, and rubber strips at the top and bottom of this product that absorb shock for smoother operation of this device. The USB power cable included can be used for providing additional power supply to the drive. macally brings us another great option for portable data storage!

The best external drive case, ever.
- Pros: Heavy gauge aluminium construction. Rubber stripping/shock absorbers along both top and bottom of case. Screws to retain HD to installation base. Dorsal venting. Firewire + USB2.0 options. Power switch! Useful and practical slipcase.
Combined with a 100g Western Digital Scorpio, this enclosure has performed flawlessly as my "mega music archive" on the go.
The power switch is a big plus for me. It allows you to setup all the cables without having the drive spin up when you don't have it settled into a final position. Also, less stress on the connectors as they no longer have to double as the "off switch".
- Cons: The "ends" are ABS plastic, but they seem fairly durable. As far as "screws stripping" I don't see this being an issue unless you are swapping your drive in/out of the case twice a week.
I don't like the mini-USB connection on the end, there was enough room for a standard full size USB-B port. This is a minor quibble though and not enough to knock an Egg off for.
- Other Thoughts: This enclosure does have some "meat on its bones" and is not as slimline as some others on the market. That said, any drive inside this thing is going to survive at lot more abuse than would otherwise. The screw retaining points on the drive drawer ensure that the internal connections stay solid.
The Firewire interface is what sold me on this enclosure. For sustained transfers, Firewire smokes USB2.0 and it seems like every computer these days has a IEEE1394 port on it. If I need it, the USB2.0 is there. I have yet to plug this enclosure in and not have it detect on the FIRST try, something I couldn't say of some other enclosures I've tried (that start with a "V").
The drive light is a VERY bright blue, and flickers to a deep purple when in a write mode. This would be distracting on a desktop, but I always put the drive on top of the tower under the desk. I suppose you could tape over it to dim things down.
A nice solid 2.5" enclosure.
- Pros: Solid aluminum construction. Non-skid rubber grips on top and bottom. Stackable design. Firewire and USB interfaces with Firewire passthru.
- Cons: Plastic endcaps could strip out if you tighten screws too tightly.
- Other Thoughts: LED is quite bright and may annoy somet people, but you could always 'paint' it over with a permanent marker to dim it.
Some larger capacity and higher power drawing drives may not be able to be powered by a single USB port (hence the second USB/power cable). Firewire will generally run just about any 2.5" hard drive just fine however.
I just ordered another one of these enclosures for a spare drive I have laying around and have used the previous one for quite some time with no problems. It's been tossed into my laptop case back and forth to work, on vacation, plane flights etc and has worked great for me. The only evidence of wear is the FireWire/USB2.0 PHR 250CC printing wearing off. Love it!
