The EZ-UP-Universal kit from Apricorn lets you upgrade your notebook's SATA or PATA hard drive then use the old drive as an external storage device in three easy steps. The EZ Gig II software can create a clone of your drive for disaster recovery or upgrade purposes. Or you use it to make periodic backups of your system. Whichever you choose you can password protect the files and make comments for easy identification.
Comments: The EZ upgrade worked flawlessly! I used it to upgrade from a 9 gB to 60 gB drive in a Sony VAIO laptop. My only challenge was getting Win 2000 to find the unformatted drive on the USB. Using Disk Management (under the Control Panel) was the key - lucky I had a smart friend. Now I can use the enclosure with the old drive and have an external USB drive - this is very good.

heavy duty enclosure

Pros: heavy duty, sturdy, nice texture feeling to it, darker than in the pictures, nice color, looks much nicer than in the pics, they dont do it justice. i only bought this for the enclosure part because i thought it looked nice. i'm very happy with it, took a whopping 10 seconds to get my HDD in there. also great that it works with both IDE and SATA drives. popped it in, plugged it in, formatted the HDD and good to go.
Cons: it's heavy for an external enclosure, and a little big/thick. won't work without some extra power, the single USB it comes with isn't enough. you'll want to use one of those USB y-cables that split off for extra power. that or get a regular 5V DC power supply. i had one from another enclosure.
Other Thoughts: little pricey, but thats because it comes with software for the cloning too. so you're paying for two items in a way.

Pros: very simple instructions, the hard drive case is very good quality strong metal, and didn't take long to upgrade my laptop.
Cons: The case is a little heavy, but its very durable.
Other Thoughts: This kit solved my worries of upgrading my laptop hard drive. It was very simple to setup and install. I have a 32-bit vista home premium operating system. The thing that I amazed me about this kit it took me only 2 hours to transfer all my data to the new drive. I went from a 160gig SATA to 640gig SATA. Thank you Newegg.com for the fast shipping and having this product in your inventory. I will recommend this product to anyone who needs there laptop's hard drive upgraded.

Backup made easy

Pros: Was very easy to backup the hard drive on the macbook. I upgraded the drive from the default 60GB to a 500GB and it seemed flawless.
Cons: None that I can think of
Other Thoughts: There was some issue with the photo library and as the macbook was my wife's I am not 100% sure if this issue existed before the upgrade or not. I think it did, but again am not 100% sure. This is not enough for me to give a negative for unless I thought this caused it. Given the nature of what this does, I doubt that to be the case.

Pros: Very high build quality, especially for the price! Tool-less.
Cons: The software was incompatible with Windows 7 x64, and I had to jump through a bunch of hoops to get a link from the Apricorn people to download a later version. That version DID work, however, and worked wonderfully.
Other Thoughts: I would prefer a full-sized USB port on the enclosure, as the mini ones always feel like they're going to break--but that's just me.
