so far so good
- Pros: so far everything works great.transferred 129MB in a matter of a few minutes on 100Mb ethernet. about the same as USB 2.0
- Cons: just my own stupid mistake
- Other Thoughts: I had to log in using the IP address until I could change the network name and the workgroup.
Reliably Loud, USB 2.0 Enclosure -- Otherwise Horrible
- Pros: Great USB 2.0 enclosure.
- Cons: Rather loud, unreliable connectivity via FTP and SMB, terrible support website.
- Other Thoughts: I'm just a few notches below networking pro and this thing was nothing but a pain. Worked via Samba and FTP with a catch. For whatever reason, any transfer over 10MB or so (regardless of NUMBER of files) would eventually cause the drive to hang and never finish. I'd be lucky to end up with a timeout. This was from a Mac if that's important to you. It's fine as a USB 2.0 drive in terms of reliability, but the fan is too loud for it to sit anywhere near your desk. I hate this thing and am about to sell it on Craigslist. It's not useless, but it's close. Firmware updates didn't solve anything and it looks like there probably aren't any coming soon. Do yourself a favor and spend a little more on a decent NAS drive or at least a better enclosure.
Vista Update
- Pros: Nothing new to add... see my previous review.
- Cons: cptech support is worthless.
- Other Thoughts: Google the firmware names that show up via the web admin info page. You'll figure out soon enough that this NAS device is just another clone of some other unknown asian NAS manufacturer. Grab the latest firmware you can find via your google search and install it.
Vista clients will now be able to connect to it's samba shares fine.
