An important tip from one of our users: don't just check total power output, find out what you need in the way of current on each power rail. If you need 20 A on your +12V rails and the supply only has 15A, it doesn't matter how many watts the supply puts out: don't buy it. Make certain that you have ENOUGH rails, too: sometimes, you need more than just two +12V rails for your setup.
Replacing an existing power supply is easier: just get a replacement that meets or exceeds the specifications of the old one. (You can usually find those printed on the side of the supply.)
That said, here's a power supply that is compatible with most ATX format motherboards, puts out 1000 watts of power (see specifications for exact distribution). Could this be your next power supply?

So Far so good, I'm Impressed
- Pros: 1Kw PSU, Single Rail 12V 80A
Relateively Cheap (for a 1Kw PSU), 6-pin, 8-pin PCI-e connectors, mesh jackets keep spaghetti cable mess to a minimum.
- Cons: BIG, BIG, BIG
- Other Thoughts: I was planning to get a new x1950 AGP and I was already having some system stability issues with my computer detecting / not detecting some of my PCI cards thar were also connected to 12V power so I decided to upgrade. After I replaced my old 500W PSU with multiple 12V 18A rail with this one all those problems went away. This was probably overkill but I wanted to get rid of this problem once and for all. I was kind of wary at first because I've never heard of silverstone before, but my computer has been running fine.
One Beast of a PSU
- Pros: The OP1000 is very stable, has a low thermal output, and plenty of connections for every device in any case.
- Cons: The sucker is HUGE! Adds quite a bit of weight to my Temjin 10 case. Cable management is a bit of a pain too, as the unit isn't modular, so you'll be left coiling the leftover cable into whatever space remains in your case.
- Other Thoughts: One thing to note is that this PSU uses a non-standard power cable, so make sure you always know where it is if you take it to a lan party. If you lose it, you'll have to order a new one.

Really big.
- Pros: Highly recommended and very powerful.
- Cons: Much bigger than it needs to be. I spent over an hour trying to get it to fit into my Thermaltake Armor case, which is pretty huge. The motherboard had to come off and I had to remove the top fan on my case to get it in.
Beastly
- Pros: Runs a Q6700 @ 3.8, 2 x 2 GB DDR 1000, 2 x 9800 GTX (OC'd), three ED Raptor without a hitch.
- Cons: Huge
- Other Thoughts: Make sure you measure your PSU compartment to ensure that this PSU will fit! It barely fits into a CM690.
- Pros: It's got a ton of cables and power to spare; what more do you want from a power supply?
The sleeving helps mitigate the huge number of cables and connectors.
- Cons: This thing is a behemoth; it's about 20% bigger than the 1000 watt PSU my friend bought at the same time as me. It forced me to remove a fan from my case to fit it in.
- Other Thoughts: Don't try to put this in anything other than a full tower; this thing is gigantic.
