Updated review..
- Pros: Well constructed. If you can live with the annoying drawbacks, it's somewhat of a good investment. It handles high resolution monitors well - well almost (see cons below).
- Cons: The BIG CON!! is that if you are using high resolution monitors (1920x1080 Viewsonic in my case) you MUST start each system connected separately. If not the systems not selected will come up in VGA mode (640x480). Not always - but about half the time.
Switching between systems has an annoying delay - but something you can live with - if you bought it you will have to or send it back.
NO CABLES SUPPLIED - a really stupid move to cheapen the price probably. You cannot use simple extenders on the keyboard and mouse lines.
- Other Thoughts: One of my LinksKey KVM switches failed and I needed a replacement quickly, so I selected this model. However, when I replace my other LinksKey KVM switch - it will NOT be with this StarTech model! Just too many hassles to make it appealing.
Handles higher resoultion video
- Pros: My old Linkskey KVM's couldn't handle the newer 1920x1080x75hz resolution well and would produce poor on screen readability. But this Startech KVM unit provides excellent video results with no noticeable loss of video quality. I can't comment on the switchability between systems as the unit does NOT come with cables, I had to use a video extender cable for the test.
- Cons: NO CABLES COME WITH THIS UNIT!!! As a bare minimum they should provide at least two and recommend purchasing additional. This KVM will be attached to four systems to replace the Linkskey units. When I opened the box I was very surprised to find no cables - even though I should have noted the picture did not show any. In the past the KVM switches I have purchased all included 4 cables with the unit.
- Other Thoughts: The unit seems to be well constructed, and the switching buttons have a much better feel to them then the two Linkskey KVM switches I now use.
Does a Good Job
- Pros: Seems solid. Works as expected. Keeps the connection with multiple servers even when restart occurs. Good construction.
- Cons: None.
- Other Thoughts: We had a cheaper KVM and it kept losing it's connection to pc's if one of them restarted. The old one was just a bit "glitchy". This one just sits there and works. I like things that just plain work.
