Solved One Multimedia issue
- Pros: Very useful when watching movies and home movies converted to Xvid. Looks decent on my 42-in. Plasma from 8 feet away with standard connections. I occasionally use this to run presentations.
- Cons: Everything other than watching movies. I use my mp3 player connected to my tv or speakers for music due to its superior playlist and playback capabilities. If I put pictures on this device, I have to convert them to my televisions aspect ratio and as small as possible without degrading quality.
- Other Thoughts: If you are looking for all-in-one multimedia playback then go with Win Home Server and a universal plug and play device. If you need a place to dump your home movies then this device will do the job. Add a laptop hard drive and adapter for more rugged portability.
So so, depending on what you want
- Pros: Good selection various codecs for video playback. Unit is fairly small and silent. Remote is pretty nice and has features for each playback mode, which are all documented in the manual. Firmware updates are still coming from Galaxy, so you're not stuck with bugs, yet. Various audio playback options including Repeat, Shuffle, and Shuffle Repeat. The interface is nice looking and consistent in each mode. Decent looking video output on both stock cables and the optional component video. Audio output mode is configurable, as is the screen type (4:3 vs 16:9) Semi customizable in that you can change the background picture, change the font, and add music to your picture slide shows.
- Cons: Half baked "Play All" feature, sub folder support, picture thumbnails, and screen saver While the manual states that "Play All" feature which will play all media in a given folder, and that there can be multiple subfolders, I found out that this does not mean that "Play All" will actually play anything in those subfolders. While there is a playlist option, it to is limited to the files in the immediate folder and gets erased when the unit is turned off. The interface itself was fairly slow, especially when a lot of media files were in the folder. The file browser window does not have a page down/up option, making is a chore to find one file among many. The thumbnails for the pictures are limited to the specific file you have highlighted. Displaying high res pictures takes a few seconds to load. The screen saver will only run when the system is idle. Poor instructions for putting drive in case, and the case itself can be tricky to get open once all the screws are out.
- Other Thoughts: I bought this and the INOi MH720 (see review) to get rid of the stacks and stacks of CDs and DVDs around the house, and keep the little one from fooling around with the CD and Blu Ray players. The wife wanted something she could just shuffle all the music with or listen to a specific artist and/or album. I wanted the screensaver support to avoid image burn in on my plasma TV. This unit did not live up to my expectations, even though I read the manual prior to purchase. While turning off the TV took care of the screensaver issue, the only way around the playback problem would be to have two sets of the same MP3 stored on the drive - one with all the MP3s dumped in it, the other with the MP3s separated out by artist/album. That's twice the space used up than should be.
Pretty good
- Pros: Supports wide variety of formats. Its small. Nice interface. Nice remote. Great concept, great price point.
- Cons: Unable to attach to the tv and the computer at the same time. Quirky behaviour on USB. Power button is lazy sometimes. Have to purchase $20 cord for HDTV (component). No SATA support.
- Other Thoughts: Overall this is a great little unit and I'm glad I bought it. I've only run into a couple random files that it didnt want to play, but have tried a large variety of formats successfully. I hope the company continues to support the new formats that come out - I read that company support is not that great. Be sure to update the firmware before you get into it. I guess everyone will complain about some part of it, but for $120, this is a great little unit and well worth the money, especially if you have an old hard drive lying around.
