AMD brings 65nm

white Reviewed By: on 1/22/2007

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: 1) High "performance per watt" rating,as high or higher than competing C2D CPUs; 2) Perfect for HTPC/silent PC applications w/ passive cooling; 3) Paves the way for true "next gen" 65nm CPUs, aka "K8L"; 4) Better late than never!
Cons: 1) Reports are that L2 cache performance is slightly slower than 90nm parts which negates other architectural changes/advantages. result is performance will be roughly the same as 90nm parts; 2) Overclocking headroom is limited due to specific limitations of AMD's early 65nm design = this architecture will still not break 3.1Ghz. So, don't expect this gen to ramp up & compete with C2D, we'll have to wait for K8L for the real horse race; 3) Brisbane/65nm was announced over 6 weeks ago but we are only just now seeing them in the channel, so this was somewhat of a "paper launch" akin to C2D launch.
Other Thoughts: 1) This will be a good CPU for various applications, but lack of additional overclocking headroom when compared to 90nm parts will limit enthusiasm. At best this gen will equal 90nm parts for performance while lowering power consumption. This is not a bad thing, but this product will likely not take the market by storm & will instead be a transition product to the K8L; 2) Note to Newegg: This would be a perfect combo w/ a good micro-ATX board, give us some options; 3) It's funny how Newegg.com doesn't publish certain user reviews. I wonder why that is. I guess I'll keep trying.

Pretty good first revision!

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: I bought this combo (w TForce 550) because I saw some reviews & the price was right. This chip's a little beast, I've got the combo running stable (prime 16 hrs) @ 3106 (9.5,x326 @ 533 htt 3x) on air! At this speed Sandra & Everest benches put its performance between a c2d e66/6700, not bad.
Cons: Needs volts (nothing crazy) to get up there, make sure you have good cooling (using Scythe SCMN-1000).
Other Thoughts: Tip: To get mobo to work over 260/270 turn on integrated memtest, set FSB in mid 200's and work up by 10 & test until you get where you want. When there, turn off memtest and boot.

Decent

Tech Level Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Inexpensive, Dual-Core
Cons: not the fastest thing in the world.
Other Thoughts: This thing runs very cool. i had an old watercooled AthlonXP 3200+ system. I upgraded only the motherboard, RAM, CPU, and waterblock. This combo runs 8C cooler at max load.

This was the cheapest dual-core CPU at newegg. Good thing about the skt AM2 is skt AM3 based chips will be backwards compatible. When the new skt AM3 chips come out (assuming you can get a BIOS update) you're good to go.

Solid chip

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Cheap! Runs very cool even with my not so great 18 dollar thermaltake cooler. Great for OC.

My gigabyte nforce4 board maxed out before the chip did. The highest I could get was 2.76ghz before my board maxed.
Cons: For the price, how could there be? Seriously, I bought a 3200+ single core a few years ago when they were pretty much top of the line, and this thing kills it for a 1/3rd the price of what I originally payed.
Other Thoughts: Get a good board if you plan to OC it past 290 FSB at a 9.5 multiplier. Which is what it stays at.

It was a little finicky if I tried lowering the multiplier any. I would suggest keeping at 9.5

The new brisbane chips have just come out, that are exactly the same but lower wattage. You might want to get those instead. But I love this chip.

Highlights

newegg AMD64 Dual-core Technology
AMD64 is designed to enable simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. With dual-core technology there are two complete processor cores in one physical package running at the same frequency to deliver TRUE multi-tasking power, allowing users to switch from one program to another without pausing for the computer to catch up and reducing annoying processing pauses.
newegg HyperTransport Technology
HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency and point-to-point link designed to increase communication speeds between integrated circuits in computers, servers, embedded systems and networking and telecommunications equipment. HyperTransport Technology in the Athlon 64 X2 3600+ Socket AM2 processor enables the speed of system bus up to 2000MHz and delivers up to 8GB/s I/O bandwidth and up to 20.8GB/s processor-to-system bandwidth.
newegg Enhanced Virus Protection
All AMD processors equipped with AMD64 technology are Enhanced Virus Protection-enabled. Enhanced virus protection acts as a preventative measure causing viruses to be localized, short-lived, and non-contagious, eventually being flushed from system memory.
newegg CNQ: Cool'n'Quiet Technology
AMD's Cool'n'Quiet technology is an innovative solution available on AMD Athlon 64 processor-based systems that can effectively lower power consumption and enable a quieter-running system while delivering performance-on-demand.
newegg AMD Virtualization
Virtualization on desktop computers allows a single PC to act like multiple virtual machines. AMD Virtualization can enable client computers to seamlessly support multiple operating environments. And it also helps make it easier for PC enthusiasts to upgrade and maintain their PCs through emulation.
