Like the superheroes of old, the AMD Phenom streaks out of the night to lay waste to your enemies. The 9600 has 4 cores that run at 2.3GHz. The 4 core Phenom processor has L1 and L2 caches for each core 2MB of L3 cache is available to be shared to handle really heavy loads or large data sets.
Memory transfers get faster than ever. HyperTransport Generation 3.0 mode allows up to 16.0GB/s of bandwidth. Add that to the 17.1GB/s from the integrated memory controller for an amazing 33.1GB/s of memory bandwidth. This unprecedented bandwidth is needed to feed the data hungry AMD64 with Direct Connect Architecture cores.
You'd think that all of this power would be too hot to handle. Think again. AMD's Cool'n'Quiet 2.0 technology works with CoolCore Technology to minimize heat while keeping power and efficiency up. Now the cores can shut down unused parts of the processor when not in use. This saves power and helps to reduce the amount of heat generated. This function is built in so there's no need for drivers or BIOS updates.

2.7ghz
- Pros: It overclocked to 2.7ghz easily.
2.8ghz required a bump in voltage, ran well for one benchmark, but eventually froze. I decided to keep it down to 2.6ghz for every day use.
2.6ghz for the price of 2.3 aint bad!
- Cons: I was hoping for 3.0ghz since I was still riding the rush from getting 3.2 out of my 5000+ BE.
- Other Thoughts: By comparing AOD Benchmark results between my 5000+ and 9600+ BE's, I have determined that the 9600+ @ 2.6ghz = 5000+ @ 3.0ghz.
I consider this to be satisfactory evidence to the effect that the Phenom is a lot better than people make it out to be.
2.7GHz stable
- Pros: Installation was smooth POSTED successfully first time. Has been stable so far under max 4 core torture testing at 2.7GHz core freq 400 MHz overclock @45 deg C core. 2x seti@home, 1x folding@home, 1x prime95. I upped the CPU VID to 1.3 V clk mult to 13.5.
- Cons: At this point I have been unable to get the ram to run at 1066 MHz, will not POST. Tried MSI released bios 1.2 with no success. I have not tweaked the ram voltages.
- Other Thoughts: Phenom 9600 Black Edition, VisionTek ATI 3870, MSI K9A2 Platinum, Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) 1066 (PC2 8500), COOLER MASTER Centurion 5, ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 64 Pro, Rosewill RP600V2-S-SL 600W

Awesome
- Pros: Inexpensive, fast, easily overclocks
- Cons: none
- Other Thoughts: This was my first AMD build....ever. I had an accident with a cat while I was upgrading my MP3 server, and fried the board and CPU. A gigabyte onboard HDI board, this CPU and some memory and I was good to go. Been running close to a year, and has since been given to my daughter with not a single problem.
Rubbish
- Pros: Works great in all 32-bit operating systems.
- Cons: COMPLETELY incompatible with ALL 64-bit operating systems; personally checked Vista, XP, and a slue of linux kernels.
AMD is COMPLETELY aware of the problem, but will not admit it as to prevent refunds to customers. AMD is willing to do that, and willing to have consumers loose use of their processor while it is being "tested" by their lab; which will of course tell you that it's working fine, and that the OS is to blame.
- Other Thoughts: I've been a fan of AMD for their economy of speed for a long time, but not at the new price that includes such business practices.
Happily, I helped cost them a two year contract with a local firm of which a group of friends are at various levels of management. Intel may be over priced, but as long as the driving force at AMD remains the same, I'll pay whatever it takes.
Great Fan
- Pros: Came with a great fan!
- Cons: none,
- Other Thoughts: I upgraded to the 3ghz phenom 945 x4 like 2 weeks after getting this. But ill be using this processor for my friends PC.
