Wow - that was cool...
- Pros: Unbelievable (typo?) price, thanks NewEgg - low power consumption & heat, consequently long battery life, FAST CPU!
- Cons: No winning Lotto or Mega Millions numbers in package...
- Other Thoughts: Upgraded from Sempron 1600 to this CPU in a typically doggish Compaq M2000. This is not the same machine, I am floored. Acts like a fast Core2 Duo running at the same speed (2.0 GHz). Did a few "races" against a Gateway MT 6705 with a Core2 Duo upgrade from 1.6 to 2.0 as well. That machine even runs DDR2 as opposed the DDR1 used here. Still, runs neck and neck on all apps tested (opening Photoshop CS3, rendering filters etc - Flash CS3 also. This will make a dandy "emergency website updater while I am on vacation" laptop now. It never was able to do that before. This was the best upgrade I could possibly have imagined (coupled with the 2 GB of GSKILL DDR, and the WD Scorpion HD). Anyone considering updationg one of these will be pleasantly surprised. AMD has a winner here - hope they weather the stock market and keepup the good work.
- Pros: Faster than the 1.6 Sempron it replaced
- Cons: none
- Other Thoughts: no case badge but then it was OEM it also run slightly warmer than the chip it replaced
Works great in Presario V2000Z
- Pros: This is a great update for my low end-presario. Taking apart the notebook was not difficult - but you must go slow and be careful. The biggest trick to taking it apart is the hidden plastic clip at the center near the screen latch. A small press inward with a tiny screwdriver will release it.
I actually had to take the notebook apart twice.....I installed the new processor along with a some Arctic Silver and after putting it back together I noticed the fan wasn't running...it was oddly quiet...so I took it apart to make sure I didn't forget to plug the fan in. Sure enough, when it booted the fan turned on but then stayed off for a long time. It only runs now when I watch movies, encode video, etc..
I had the ML-37 before and so there haven't been noticable performance improvements, but for temperature and power alone it's been great. I'm gonna put the now spare ML in another Presario that has a Semperon.
I think my specific model was a Presario CTO 2603
- Cons: You have to take out like fifteen screws just to get the base of the laptop off take out the memory and harddisk and risk breaking an internal plastic clip.
- Other Thoughts: It took about 30 minutes from start to finish.
