When replacing your Socket 939 mobo isn't an option, the Opteron 165 processor is a great choice to boost system performance and extend usability. This AMD64 based dual core processor runs at a respectable 1.8GHz and has 1MB of L2 cache per processor. AMD64 technology delivers peak performance with today’s 32-bit apps and has a built in upgrade path to the 64-bit apps that are coming.
Direct Connect Architecture drastically reduces performance-owering bottlenecks. It works with the HyperTransport technology and integrated memory controller to speed up data transfers and keep the pipelines full so your system doesn’t waste clock cycles waiting for data.

Best money spent!
- Pros: I put in my order on a Thu morning 5am. It arrived the next day @ 4pm w/ 3 day shipping!! Thats what you call service! Newegg rocks!
This puppy overclocks like crazy! Got it from 1.8ghz to 2.8ghz w/ stock cooling but not stable at 2.8. Should be stable easily w/ better cooling. 2.7 is stable but i'm running it at 2.6ghz (290x9 , 1.425volts) to be safe. This chip is great - it idles at 24c and full load at 47c. I let prime95 run for 16 hrs and looked at mbm - it never went above 47c.
- Cons: You will need a good mobo and memory to be able to really take advantage of this cpu's potential. Get the DFI lanparty series and OCZ ram. Will not disappoint.
If you can not get it to go 2.6 stable w/ stock cooling, you are doing something wrong. Or you need to get a better mobo.
- Other Thoughts: I dont upgrade often. I was still using an xp1800+ from 4 years ago w/ 1gig pc2100 ram. So this was an extremely big upgrade for me. This should last me the next 5 years... or at least I hope!!
Some benchmarks you may find interesting. Before and after the overclock :
3dmark01 21,225 -> 28,187 3dmark05 6,077 -> 6,366 3dmark06 cpu test 1343 -> 1936
AMD Opteron 1.8 (200x9 , 1.3v) --> 2.6 (290x9 , 1.45v) DFI Lanparty Ultra-D MB 2g OCZ DDR4000 (2x1g@3,4,4,8) Soundblaster Live! 24-bit Sapphire ATI x850xt 256 PCI-E
**Please note that all the benchmarks listed were taken from the 2nd run to eliminate any bottlenecks or caching issues from the HDD/memory.
Very happy w/ this purchase and very happy w/ Newegg.
sorry way overpriced
- Comments: Got two of these from somewhere else for MUCH MUCH less this is still WAY overpriced by newegg, but its an EXCELLENT processor overlocked it to 2.8GHz on air cooling runs smooth.

what stepping a u getting now
- Pros: overclocks great most 2.7 to 2.8
- Cons: 9x multiplier gives some mobo fits over 300 fsb=2.7 i think would go higher with a 10x.oh well buy a 170 then.
- Other Thoughts: are these still lcb9e ?or if different what are they,and had any luck overclocking them?thanks
Best 100 dollar I've ever spent... on a CPU
- Pros: An amazing overclocker. Got mine up to almost 3.1 GHZ on stock cooling but definitely not stable. Right now mine it running 2.8GHZ (315X9 @ 1.375 volts in the BIOS). It's runs at 55 C on load with a Zalman 9700 cooler. I want to try for 3 GHZ stable but that's for a latter date.
- Cons: Only socket 939
- Other Thoughts: Great upgrade for the pretty much dead socket 939. If you're trying to pull more time out of your 939 system before you upgrade to an AM2/AM2+/AM3 system or a 775 system then I would say go with this or one of the higher 1XX Opterons you most likely won't be disappointed. Oh and I got mine to under 30 seconds in super PI 1 million.
- Pros: OC'd to 300x9 out the box on stock voltage. Mobo is DFI SLI-DR. Highly recommended. Speed of a FX-60 on the budget.
- Cons: None

Highlights
 |
AMD64 Dual-core Technology AMD64 is designed to enable simultaneous 32 and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. With dual-core technology there are two complete processor cores in one physical package running at the same frequency to deliver TRUE multi-tasking power, allowing users to switch from one program to another without pausing for the computer to catch up and reducing annoying processing pauses.
|
 |
HyperTransport Technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link designed to increase communication speeds between integrated circuits in computers, servers, embedded systems, and networking and telecommunications equipment. With HT technology the AMD Opteron 165 Dual-core processor enjoys 1000MHz system bus speeds.
|
 |
Enhanced Virus Protection All AMD processors equipped with AMD64 technology are Enhanced Virus Protection-enabled. Enhanced virus protection acts as a preventative measure causing viruses to be localized, short-lived, and non-contagious, eventually being flushed from system memory.
