The AMD Opteron 148 Socket 939 processor represents the landmark introduction of AMD64 with Direct Connect Architecture. It is designed to run existing 32-bit applications with outstanding performance and offers customers a simplified migration path to 64-bit computing. This processor provides a dramatic leap forward in compatibility, performance, investment protection, and reduced total cost of ownership (TCO).

This innovative processor operates at 2.2GHz with 1MB L2 Cache for significantly enhanced overall system performance and incredible efficiency in complex computing environments such as CAD, graphics and scientific workstation platforms or high-end gaming desktop systems.

  • newegg AMD64 Technology AMD64 technology is designed to enable simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. With Direct Connect Architecture, AMD64 processors address and help eliminate the real challenges and bottlenecks of system architectures because everything is directly connected to the central processing unit.
  • newegg Integrated DDR DRAM Memory Controller The AMD Opteron 148 Socket 939 processor is integrated with a DDR DRAM memory controller capable of supporting ECC DRAM. The integrated memory controller changes the way the processor accesses main memory, resulting in increased bandwidth, reduced memory latencies, and enhanced processor performance. Usage of DDR400/PC3200 memory will provide the processor with up to 6.4GB/s memory bandwidth.
  • newegg HyperTransport Technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link designed to increase communication speeds between integrated circuits in computers, servers, embedded systems, and networking and telecommunications equipment. With HT technology the AMD Opteron 148 processor enjoys 1000MHz system bus speeds.
  • newegg Enhanced Virus Protection All AMD processors equipped with AMD64 technology are Enhanced Virus Protection-enabled. Enhanced virus protection acts as a preventative measure causing viruses to be localized, short-lived, and non-contagious, eventually being flushed from system memory.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent processor

Pros: I've had this chip now for over a year and it is still going. I recently overclocked it to 280 x 10 with 1.5V and running stable. I am using it with ASUS A8N-SLI mobo with G-Skill 2 gig ram.

Cons: Not a dual core and socket 939 is going away.

Other Thoughts: Don't do gaming but will probably do so in the future. This cpu is simply awesome. But it now for this low price.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome chip

Pros: This chip is a champ. I've had it coming up on a year now, and it's been an excellent experience all around. Dropped this puppy in a DFI SLI-DR Exp. and it booted right up. This chip runs cool, almost cold really. The stock HSF was adequite for the chip even overclocked.

Cons: Not dual core?

Other Thoughts: If you overclock, make sure you have decent ram, because this chip is capable of generous overclocks. Was only able to achieve 2.53gHz due to low-end ram.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate to first review

Pros: Same as first review.

Cons: Model number discrepancy?might be
nothing-maybe I am just ignorant.

Other Thoughts: Just noticed my "retail"[in box
with COA]cpu has an OEM tray model
number-OSA148DAA5BN-instead of
the OSA148BNBOX model number P.I.B.
Opteron 148's are supposed to have.
Wondering if this is normal?

1 out of 5 eggsAMD RMA Procedure

Pros: This is a great family of processors but....

Cons: Never had any problems with AMD before, but I got a bad one, errors and boot problems on two different systems that worked fine with different processors. I was occupied and did not install until I was out of Neweggs processor RMA window. My mistake! It was now a month old. Called AMD tech support, but RMA process is now online, unfortunately the serial number was not in the online database, called tech support again, got a live person and had to hang up to pull the processor to check if the serial number matched the one on the warranty. Yep it did. Called again and got it registered, but had to go back online for the RMA process. RMA was denied because the processor was physically undamaged and the “operating system loads successfully without issue.” Yep, after half a dozen boot attempts I could get it to load, but it was unusable.
Remember NO BOOT if you RMA to AMD!

Other Thoughts: I spent a good chunk of time with AMD's poor customer service, the last RMA from Newegg took a couple of minutes. Dealing with companies like this make you appreciate how great Neweggs customer service is!
