5 out of 5 eggsUpgrading Mac Mini Core Solo

Pros: Upgraded Mac mini Core Solo, and notice a big difference.

Cons: Slightly warmer than Core Solo

Other Thoughts: Broke the heatsink clips on the Mac Mini and had to cut the springs and use some pins from an old video card heatsink. Be very careful and use needlenose pliers to remove the pins to avoid headache. Found some 4-40 nylon screws for $6 on *Bay, but did not need it.

5 out of 5 eggsQuick/Low Heat

Pros: Good processor for laptop build. Does what i need it to do when i need to do it. Its very quick, doesnt heat up much at all, and hardly takes any power away from battery.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Excellent speed.

4 out of 5 eggsHot Stuff

Pros: This is my first dual core CPU and Intel CPU in sometime. Its also my first CORE series too, I have had Pentium and Pentium Xeon. I must hand it back to intel and say "wow". The CPU is quick and handles a majority of my tasks very smooth and quick. It has alot of nice features (MMX,SSE,SSE2,SSE3,x86-64). Its only 1.8Ghz but i couldn't imagine having a faster CPU doing this computer any better. I don't know really what AMD makes to compete against this, since this is relatively a new CPU series.

Cons: Its HOT. The CPU temp hovers between 50c - 65c, and that makes me nervous. I seem to hear that alot around newegg.com so maybe these processors run hot (57ish on idle).

Other Thoughts: I would like to run some benchmarks on this CPU, but I really don't care too much. I also know that the mainboard i use controls both the CPU fan speed and the system fan speed and it seems really reluctant to speed the CPU fan past 1500 rpm, and the system fan is almost never on. Furthermore, i can't change this feature too. Kinda freaks me out. Intel made the chip set for this board too (North 945GM, South ICH7-MDH), and the chip set doesn't have a fan on it. In fact, i haven't seen a fan on 2 boards that use these same chips. The reason i bring it up is because the chip set is getting hotter than the CPU, typically about 2-5C more. So i guess my other thought is that because Intel makes a VERY hot running chip set, and their CPUs run hot, maybe Intel is just making chips in general that run a little hot. The chip set and the CPU look the same and use the same process too. no problems with either of them so far.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Intel Product

Pros: High performance. This processor in a lappy is faster than the best Pentium 4 desktop. Excellent pricing. Fairly cool operation, but needs a hsf.

Cons: It's not quad core.

Other Thoughts: I have some of the fastest and meanest Pentium 4 machines, that blow away most of current technology, but not these Core 2 Duo Processors from Intel. This unit compiles a Linux 2.6.24 kernel in 10 minutes. It does everything at blinding speed. I can't keep up with it, and I'm a very savvy and experienced computer power user.

I've stressed the cpu, and it simply will not get hotter than 54 C, which is pretty hot, but tolerable. I must note: This performance is in an Asus Z62FM notebook.

5 out of 5 eggsWorthy upgrade

Pros: It's a Core 2 Duo. Upgrading from a Core Solo (Yonah), my compile time for a popular game mod went from nearly 7 minutes to about 3 and a half minutes. Quite the improvement.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I upgraded a Mac Mini with a 1.5 Ghz Core Solo chip. As mentioned previously, make sure you have some quality thermal paste (Arctic Silver 5 is a great choice).

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Installed this in my new whitebook with 1.5GB of ddr2, runs great and mersenne prime stable for several hours before I stopped the torture test to use my new laptop :)

Cons: make sure to buy thermal compound if you don't have any and are upgrading from an old cpu

5 out of 5 eggsgreat upgrade!

Pros: incredible speed boost over 1.5 solo I replaced. A recommended upgrade for any Mac Mini owner!

Cons: none, though install may be a little tricky for a few brave souls.

Other Thoughts: I wish the faster chips were cheaper, but for the price this upgrade was worth every penny.

5 out of 5 eggsSweet deal

Pros: At the lower end of the price scale, but not the performance scale. Easy install and great speed boost for my Mac Mini.

Cons: The higher speed Meroms are quite a bit more expensive for a few hundred mhz. I'd have gotten at least a 2.0 if the price didn't scale so horribly.

Other Thoughts: New processor brain = teh hotness. Ripping dvd's at 80+ fps makes me feel warm and fuzzy-ish. Good Lord I am a Geek.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Mac Mini Upgrade!

Pros: Fast, runs cool, no surprises. Installed in my Mac Mini Solo 1.5 took about 1/2 hour. CPU runs at a stable 45c. Great upgrade. Reasonable price. Significant performance increase.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Easy performance upgrade

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Bought this chip to upgrade my Intel Mac Min Core Solo. Dropped in the new chip, fired it up and everytying works fine. The system is running Ubuntu for a MythTV frontend, and can now play 1080i content without problems!!
