In today's usage environment, processor speed alone is not enough to ensure a great experience. The advanced dual core Intel Pentium D 945 processor features two 65nm processor cores each running at 3.4GHz with integrated 2MB L2 cache. The cutting edge 65nm manufacturing process significantly reduces power consumption and improves thermal performance. Users today have high expectations for their PCs and want the most productivity and enjoyment from their PCs when running multiple applications simultaneously. The Intel dual-core processor delivers consumer value by providing additional computing resources that expand the PC's capabilities and provide platform-level advancements for consumers in the form of higher throughput and simultaneous computing. Featuring Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology, Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and Execute Disable Bit, the Intel Pentium D 945 processor delivers outstanding desktop and workstation computing experiences."

  • newegg Dual-Core Processing with 2x2MB L2 Cache Intel dual-core Pentium D 945 processors have two complete processor cores in one physical package running at the same frequency. The cores share the same interface with chipset and memory, but each core has its own set of registers and cache for truly parallel computing. Each processor core has its own 2MB L2 Cache (4MB total) enabling improved overall system performance by allowing each core to have faster access to larger amounts of the most often used area.
  • newegg Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel EM64T) Intel EM64T provides an enhancement to Intel 32-bit architecture by enabling the desktop processor platform to access larger amounts of memory. With appropriate 64-bit supporting hardware and software, platforms based on an Intel processor supporting Intel EM64T can enable use of extended virtual and physical memory.
  • newegg Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology (EIST) EIST allows the system to dynamically adjust processor voltage and core frequency to decrease average power consumption and average heat production. Combined with existing power saving features, EIST may provide an excellent balance between providing power when you need it and conserving power when you don't.
  • newegg Execute Disable Bit (EDB) Intel's Execute Disable Bit function can prevent certain classes of malicious "buffer overflow" attacks when combined with a supporting operating system. Execute Disable Bit allows the processor to classify areas in memory where application code can execute and where it cannot. When a malicious worm attempts to insert code in the buffer, the processor disables code execution, preventing damage or worm propagation.

2 out of 5 eggsok for its time

Pros: 6 years ago it was a revolution

Cons: when the e8400 core 2 duo came out the pentium D945 became a complete joke

Other Thoughts: ive been toying with this 945 for a few months , its a bit slow but of course i'm compairing it to the new processors i use in my main computers like the e8400 core 2 duo, FX4100 AMD quad core,Q6600 core 2 quad etc. In fact ive managed to get a little tiny e2140 to outperform this chip and thats a 1.6 ghz processor , The first dual core known as the pentium D was outdated extremely fast.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent processor

Pros: Truly Dependable! Been running on a Asus P5WD2 Premium motherboard for 6months with only one hardware crash. OC's to 4.0GHz even with slight undervolting. Excellent running BF2 and Blackhawk Down at high detail .

Cons: The stock intel fan is inadequate and noisy, switch to high rated aftermarket solution like Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro and a rated thermal compound.

Other Thoughts: excellent alternative for boards not supporting core duo or higher.

5 out of 5 eggsLong Term

Pros: Still running extremely strong, stable and with the right equipment, faster than any other computer I have used. Temps: 23C Idle and 33C 100% load (Ambient 33C)

Cons: Locked multiplier on current mobo being used. Old Netburst design limits. The cores communicate externally, much less efficient than newer chips with internal core communication.

Other Thoughts: Right now running 896Mhz FSB (Max for mobo) and CPU @ 3808Mhz (3.8Ghz). With a 955X or 975X chipset you can really squeeze the most out of these. I'm pairing that with a Gig of DDR2 @ 736 and a 74GB raptor. Extremely fast. Windows loads in about 23 secons.

3 out of 5 eggsups and downs

Pros: For those limited to the LGA775 motherboards that don't offer Core2 Duo support this would be an alright choice. This CPU does a good job at normal computer tasks and handles modern games well (though not great). For general use this chip is good and in some cases more then is required. For Gaming it is a moderate (thankfully not too poor) performer.

Cons: $$$- I think many may have noticed what other CPUs can be obtained for the same price or little more that offer better performance and overclocking potential.

Other Thoughts: I've owned this CPU for nearly 8 months now and have to say I've enjoyed my experience so far. Regardless of other CPUs on the market that prove stronger opponents this does make for an alright chip for those that have motherboards that do not support the core 2 duo and are looking to upgrade there current CPU.Minor air cooled overclocking proved semi-successful on an intel 975X chipset based motherboard. Was able to hit 4 Ghz on 1.35V core though an after market heatsink became essential to keep temps down. For the average user to casual gamer this chip should prove to be of good use, though for the enthusiast or hardcore gamer this chip shouldn't be taken into consideration unless budget and/or motherboard provide limitations.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat CPU

Pros: Plays Doom 3, Flight Simulator X, and Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow all on high settings. 3.4ghz!

Cons: Gets hot, buy it might just be my heatsink. I have a Hyper 48 on there, but after googling it I found that other people with Pentium Ds were having the same problem. I get around 1400rpm and my temps at idle are 43C and after playing FSX it gets up to 63C.

Other Thoughts: Get liquid cooling.

5 out of 5 eggssolid processor !!

Pros: good multiplier, x17, over clock to 4.0 ghz, a nice and stable system with one pair 1gb x 2 kingston hyperx 533mhz, the temperature still barely goes over 44 celcius under heavy load , encoding a movie while playing Fate of Dragon (well, old old game but still sweet to play) + using Hidownload to download a few large files , leave yahoo messenger on, aim on, nero waveeditor on and this thing still manage all application under control.

Cons: can't do house works for me, like washing , drying clothes, vacuum the house, do the homework for me, can't tell lie to my parents when i went out with my gf, and can't babysit my baby cousin all that stuffs, you know.

Other Thoughts: i think it is cooler temperature than other member in pentium D family (somebody mention 95 watts versus 130 watts), personally, i love both 945 and the E6600, the old and chubby 820 i bought long time a go still doing ok but i hate the fact that Nero HD keep saying that "820 , upgrade recommended" instead of "820, ok, you don't need to upgrade for another 5 years" :P

5 out of 5 eggshot item

Pros: speed boost with performance is what this chip runs...2x performance than the pd 915 i replaced! high level dual core cpu!

Cons: listening to my cpu fan rev up more often...and seeing the price drop again later on...

Other Thoughts: satisfied with cpu...don't have any numbers for thermal readings for cpu but good thermal grease and a decent heat sink seems to make this hot running chip chipper!
