Work Great! Need Tweaking on AMD for 1600 MHz
- Pros: Just purchased this set for a AM3 and 790 chipset.
Set it up and worked. However, the BIOS registered it at 1066 MHz and not the advertised 1600 MHz, but keep this in mind that the AM3 + 790 chipset doesn't support speeds over 1333 MHz without OC.
To get the RAM to work with 1600 Mhz, I used the OCZ forum and searched around and found a forum page on a mobo similar to mine. It listed the exact timings to use and suggested voltages to OC the NB. With the suggested values, things turned out great. I've been setup this way for over a week now. I've ran memtest86+ and Prime95 and I've had no problems.
Try the OCZ forums and posting first if you went AMD. The OCZ guys seem very knowledgeable and responsive. Latest Intel chips / mobo should support 1600 MHz without a hitch (hence why some reviews state they didn't have to tweak anything and worked out of box at 1600 MHz)
- Cons: Had to tweak to get the RAM to 1600 Mhz, but given the support from the OCZ forums, was able to get the memory to stated 1600 MHz ratings without a problem.
Try the forums like I stated above before calling it quits.
- Other Thoughts: AMD Phenom II x4 965 BE
Gigabyte GA-790XTA-UD4 OCZ Gold 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600 MHz OCZ Vertex 30 GB SSD / Seagate 500 GB 7200 RPM Sapphire Radeon 5770 1GB DDR5 Windows 7 64-bit Pro WEI: 7.0
Not plug and play by any means
- Pros: It is 4GB of RAM
It works It is quite pretty to look at It runs on low power
- Cons: It only works if you overclock and overvolt your MB and the RAM
It defaults to some seriously slow speed You must KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING to use this at the advertised speed (or you will be out a MB and the RAM, maybe a CPU, too) The instructions don't even exist Completely misleading advertising Would wish this ram on anyone just doing their first, second, maybe even third build You'd better know the BIOS very well, because you'll be in there tweaking settings of acronyms you should never need to know the meaning of
- Other Thoughts: The best I've gotten out of this RAM is 1333-7-7-7-24. 1600-8-8-8-24 (the advertised speed) doesn't last more than 10 minutes before a lockup occurs, and this is likely my 1,000th+ build (who counts after 500, right?). Granted, this RAM is still fast once you spend hours, maybe a day or so tweaking many settings and overvolting the RAM (beyond the advertised 1.65v) just to get it stable, but that is not what I bought. I bought RAM which was advertised to run just like the 20,000 sticks I've bought before it.. RAM which should work as advertised when plugged in. If you are new to PC builds, move on. When the company which makes the RAM must put a 3 page explanation as to how to make the RAM run, with screenshots of MB overvolting and clock tweaking, yet gives zero indication of the complexity of using the product prior to purchasing.. run.
Better Timings than Advertised
- Pros: Advertised timings for memory modules were 8-8-8-24, CPU-Z shows timings set at 7-7-7-16, no modifications necessary. Memory runs stable and really fast. Great value.
- Cons: None yet.
