1 out of 5 eggsp84, a real let down

Pros: Nice package, uses SAS and PCI-E, no wires, no mess

Cons: Pricey & have NOT hit speeds as advertised, not sure what's going on. I could be out $1400 if I don't fix this quickly!

Other Thoughts: I am only getting 220-240MB burst in HD Tach. The part # is OCZSSDPCIE-ZDP84256G and I am using LSI's latest drivers for the PCI Express to 8-Port 3Gb/s SAS Controller on the card, which translates to the LSISAS1068E chipset. I have also tried OCZ's driver as well, no luck - but it appears to be the same! The OS is Windows 2008 x64 and the motherboard is an Asus Crossfire III using latest drivers available from Asus.

Any idea why so slow?

P.S. My Lacie 4TB e-sata raid 10 array is faster!!! (hits about 250MB)

1 out of 5 eggsIncompatible

Pros: None so far.

Cons: Be careful to follow OCZ's compatibility charts for motherboards. It is extremely limited on the motherboards that you can use. I have a p55 chipset gigabyte motherboard and OCZ has a known compatibility issue with gigabyte boards. There is no fix and they are working on the problem, but I found this out after the fact. The OCZ Z-drive displays the raid post, for the drive, and then freezes before I can install the operating system or boot to a cd drive. Now I have to buy a new motherboard on the compatibility list (that I did not know existed).

Another issue with this drive are the dimensions. It takes up space above and below the PCI express slot. It is hard, if not impossible, to fit cards in slots adjacent to the slot it is in. Also, capacitors on the motherboard may block the OCZ drive from seating properly in the PCI express slot.

There is almost no documentation. I received a small slip of paper informing me of the compatibility list for motherboards.

High price.

Other Thoughts: I have not been able to experience the performance of the drive yet. So this is more of a review of compatibility issues, dimensions, and lack of documentation.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are sorry for problem. Our staff is looking into this, and we hope it can be resolved soon. It is possible that anew BIOS from GB would solve the problem since this appears to be an isolated issue.
Thank you

4 out of 5 eggsBig but FAST!

Pros: -Very, very fast
-Large amount of storage for an SSD
-Works with Windows Server products (the m84 model is only supported on desktop OSs)
-3 year warranty.
-No need to buy a separate controller
-Essentially no CPU utilization. watch out for CPU utilization on competing products!

Cons: -Card is BIG. Thick and long. You will typically not be able to put other cards in slots next to it.
-No internal redundancy (more of an observation then a con).
-Requires extra power (via standard Molex connector) The amount of power the card pulls is insignificant, but you will need a spare molex plug for it.
-Not SLC (Get the e84 model if you want SLC)

Other Thoughts: Literally this is just 4 OCZ SSDs soldered onto a SuperMicro LSI chipset SAS RAID-0 controller card. Check the OCZ website for motherboard compatibility lists due to it's size. I removed an egg due to it's odd size that prevents me from putting two of them in any of the 8 machines I tried to put them in at the same time. If they could just reconfigure it to fit into a single normal slot width it would be a lot more useful.

File copies are basically as fast as advertised. Here is some numbers I recorded in I/O meter for more "I/O intense" operations:
IOMeter 67% read 4K 100% random 16 queue length:
11584 I/Os/sec @ 45.25MB/s
I/O response Time: 1.38ms
CPU utilization: <1%

5 out of 5 eggsRAID array on a card....cool

Pros: Anyone who has or at least has considered building a high end SSD RAID array quickly realizes that the basic on board RAID controller you find on most motherboards (even very high end ones) just isn't going to cut it for multiple drives that each have read/write speeds of 250 MB/s. For that you need a high end RAID card running on a PCIeX8 (or at least X4) lane. This product from OCZ is a fascinating solution to that problem. It's basically a high end raid controller with multiple hard drives in a RAID_0 configuration all built into one package. No cables, no mess. Pretty cool.

Cons: It's GREEN! Why do manufacturers keep making super high end components on ugly old green boards?

Can't complain about price. It is what it is. Top of the high end user market.

Other Thoughts: If I could afford one of these I'd be paying someone else to write a review.

Even at it's extreme price this is the "mainstream market" version. Check out OCZ's website for thier "high performance" versions.

They have one version with a fully enclosed case that is all black (with a blue wave design). Part number is OCZSSDPCIE-1ZDRV1T , but it's not on the OCZ website.

5 out of 5 eggsuberspeed

Pros: This is much faster than the traditional sata SSD, its basically NAND flash like a SSD just solderer to a raid card bypassing the slower sata bus form th faster pcie buss

Cons: price
no improvement in access time

Other Thoughts: ocz wraps up, fine ssd drive and melds it with a good pcie raid card
