Take Note
- Pros: Quiet
- Cons: may not be recognized at first
- Other Thoughts: This is just a preliminary review because I have only had the drive a day, but I want to point out a couple of things. I'm not the first to note these, but this should be repeated often, I think.
If your drive is not recognized, try jumping pins 5 & 6. This is a very common problem, perhaps only with VIA chipsets, that seems only to be discussed right here.
AFTER I jumped pins 5 & 6, I was able to partition and format the drive in QTparted in Mepis Linux; works fine so far.
Also, this drive has 2 power connectors, the new SATA and legacy (as IDE drives have); you can use only one connector at a time, CAREFUL! Using both connectors can fry the drive.
Because jumpers are a good thing
- Pros: I ordered this spur of the moment b/c of the great price (woot Newegg) - w/o realizing it is SATA II - the older system board I tried to use it with could not recognize it and I thought it was dead. Replaced with another brand, same problem. Discovered the jumpers on the WD. Jumpered DOWN to SATA 150, works like a dream and will allow future speed increase with board upgrade. The other model I bought has no jumpers and can't be used.

another one bites the dust
- Pros: worked at first.
- Cons: died after 16 months.
This is the 3rd one that has died.
- Other Thoughts: the WD upgrade warranty sucks.
New Egg still rocks!!
If you purchase one of these lemons, get the extended warranty. I wish I had.
Great HDD
- Pros: Quiet and loads programs fast.
- Cons: None at all.
- Other Thoughts: Go with this HDD if you want a SATA HDD.
Failed after 11 mo
- Pros: Cheap, quiet and fast.
- Cons: Failed.
- Other Thoughts: When it failed, it started to spin up, but then it stopped. Now the BIOS won't even recognize it.
