The Western Digital Caviar SE delivers outstanding performance with a 7200RPM spindle speed and SATA 300 MB/s interface. SUch speed gives you a cold start in only about 9 seconds. 80GB gives you room to store all manner of possible programs and applications. The hard drive has an 8MB buffer, maximizing data transfer from buffer to host at 3.0 GB/s, and from buffer to disk at 748Mbits/s. The minimal non-recoverable error rate of 1 in 1014 and start/stop cycles make this disk remarkably reliable.
Cool operation results in the highest reliability, even in intensely hot environments such as digital video recorders. That's why these, the coolest on the market, are the drives of choice for the world's leading consumer electronics and PC manufacturers. With wide compatability, exquisite performance and solid reliability, WD gives us another great offering to bring to you!

Take Note
- Pros: Quiet
- Cons: may not be recognized at first
- Other Thoughts: This is just a preliminary review because I have only had the drive a day, but I want to point out a couple of things. I'm not the first to note these, but this should be repeated often, I think.
If your drive is not recognized, try jumping pins 5 & 6. This is a very common problem, perhaps only with VIA chipsets, that seems only to be discussed right here.
AFTER I jumped pins 5 & 6, I was able to partition and format the drive in QTparted in Mepis Linux; works fine so far.
Also, this drive has 2 power connectors, the new SATA and legacy (as IDE drives have); you can use only one connector at a time, CAREFUL! Using both connectors can fry the drive.
Because jumpers are a good thing
- Pros: I ordered this spur of the moment b/c of the great price (woot Newegg) - w/o realizing it is SATA II - the older system board I tried to use it with could not recognize it and I thought it was dead. Replaced with another brand, same problem. Discovered the jumpers on the WD. Jumpered DOWN to SATA 150, works like a dream and will allow future speed increase with board upgrade. The other model I bought has no jumpers and can't be used.
