The Western Digital Scorpio 120GB hard drive delivers best-in-class performance with lower power needs when compared to other notebook drives. In You'll get the quietest 2.5-inch drive on the market with real-time data protection technology to care for your records, games and pictures. This compact drive, with an 8MB cache buffer, rotates at a speed of 5400 RPM, but with a power curve of a 4200RPM drive. Its average seek time is only 12ms and average latency is 5.5ms.

Despite a remarkable data transfer rate of up to 100MB/sec, WD's WhisperDrive makes the drive almost silent. The most common hard drive failure is due to shocks: ShockGuard protects the drive against damage from bumps and vibrations, and the stainless steel casing completes the protection, keeping it safe up to 250Gs while working, and 900Gs idle. Its SoftSeek technology offers smooth operation of read/write seek function, reducing seek noise, while the DuraStep Ramp technology locks the heads in a secured position, even when power is off. This is a full-featured drive in a tiny package, and a great offering from Western Digital!

  • newegg Ultra ATA 100 (ATA-6) Interface The Ultra ATA 100 interface provides up to 100 MB/s throughput for fast data transfer.
  • newegg WD WhisperDrive and SoftSeek Technology WhisperDrive technology minimizes noise to virtually below the threshold of human hearing. To cut seek noise, SoftSeek technology streamlines read/write seeking algorithms resulting in more efficient operation.
  • newegg WD ShockGuard Technology ShockGuard technology instantaneously protects the hard drive against damage from bumps and vibrations during operation. This technology enables WD Scorpio drives to achieve industry-leading shock protection specs.

2 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Fast delivery from Newegg.

Cons: DOA

Other Thoughts: Fast RMA. Newegg refunded the purchase price because they had discontinued this drive. I think it sucks when you have to pay shipping for an item that is DOA, then have to pay shipping to get it back to Newegg.

5 out of 5 eggsAnother Great Western Digital Drive

Pros: Runs faster and cooler than the 4200 RPM Toshiba drive (30 GB) that came in my Compaq Presario 2103US laptop. I ran the bare WD drive externally via USB while cloning my old drive and it was very quiet.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: This was my first time buying a laptop hard drive, but I have had good results with WD drives in desktop computers in the past. I don't buy a lot of hard drives, but when I do, I get Western Digital.

5 out of 5 eggsFreakin Sweet

Pros: Very cheap for the size, normal 120 gig notebook HD are a lot more expensive. Low energy use, very quiet, does not get very hot, even after 4 hours of running.

Cons: None here

Other Thoughts: Don't bother looking any further, inexpensive, great working product. Also great to use as an external hard drive, only one USB port is needed.

1 out of 5 eggsDead out of the box

Pros: Good price for the drive. As usual, NewEgg's service was great.

Cons: Too bad the HD made clicking noises out of the box. I just got the RMA. It will take about 21 days to get a replacement.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Upgrade for the money..

Pros: Quiter, cheaper and most of all a lot more capacity than the Hitachi Travelstar 40GB 72K it replaces. Warrantied thru 13Oct 2010, can't beat that esp. for the price.

Cons: First one was DOA, @ least Newegg sent replacement thru UPS 2days. I hope this drive last up to its 3yrs warranty period and perhaps even longer....but for $69? i'm happy already!

Other Thoughts: Downgrade as far as speed? yes, but not that much.Photoshop loads pretty quick still.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Hard Drive

Pros: Right out of the box this works to perfection. A simple switch of hard drives and now easily tri-booting vista xp and ubuntu

Cons: For novice users there was no instruction manual so locating their hard drive could be difficult.

2 out of 5 eggsWorked well until it crashed

Pros: Purchased this unit as an upgrade for my laptop. The upgrade process was easy. It gave flawless service for 7 months.

Cons: It failed after 7 months of service. This is the first crash I've suffered from a WD drive.
