Sweet: Compact, high capacity
- Pros: Compact, high capacity, single USB cable for both power and data, reasonable speed (for 5400 RPM drive), attractive, runs cool, whisper quiet.
I've been getting right around 15.2 MB/sec transfer rates for writes, 22.8 MB/sec for reads, which is very respectable for a 5400 RPM drive.
I'm using it for offsite backup storage, so its compact size, solid feel and short cable, make it very portable. Even after 300 GB of constant writing of encrypted files, it remained very cool and whisper quiet. Quite impressive!
No problems with adequate power to run flawlessly as reported by some reviews. I've tried it on a couple of desktops, my NAS, and 4 laptops without a hitch.
Really like this baby!
- Cons: Trivial things like I don't like the LED light color, and one of the rubber feet had to be glued back on! Hate to even mention such trivialities.
- Other Thoughts: Meets my purposes perfectly. Would highly recommend for offsite backup storage, backing up tons of photos while traveling, or other similar uses where compact dimensions and large capacity are required.
very fragile
- Pros: Small, self-powered, fast enough to edit HD videos directly to drive via USB with no stuttering or lag.
- Cons: Extremely fragile - even when powered off.
- Other Thoughts: I've had the 80, 250, and 340GB versions of these WD 2.5" portables over the last two years. Each time they come out with a larger capacity, I bump up.
With all the previous versions, I've had bumps and drops that I thought would surely kill the drive - yet they all continued to run error-free. In fact, I stupidly hung my 340GB drive from the USB cable from a wall-mounted PC that was 6' up. It dropped off the cable, and fell onto tile floor. It cracked the case, but the drive was not damaged. That is very impressive that it survived my stupidity.
This 500 GB drive is just the opposite. It slipped out of my hand from less than 6 inches above my desk as I was putting it down. It was powered off. It landed on a padded keyboard place maty. I didn't even consider it an issue. Yet, when I plugged it in, it would no longer spin up. It groaned, and moaned - but she was toast.
RMA'ed it, and Newegg has a no-charge replacement on the way. A+ for newegg - not so much for
ahead of the pack
- Pros: Had WD passport drives for few years now.
My oldest passport drive is 120 gb, it took a lot of abuse and been overworked for months at a time - I use it as staging for downloads/uploads. It is still spinning nicely and error-free, which is rather surprising, considering the permanent load. These 500 gb drives are great, small size, light, easy to travel with, handle harsh conditions ok, stay fairly cool, have low power consumption, etc. In my experience WD makes an extremely reliable storage. I like the new design. Recessed white light instead of old blue is nifty. Cable is a little longer. These units come in different colors - helps a bit if you have tons of stuff, each category may have its own color.
- Cons: none, really.
Oh, wait, I'd rather see the disks preformatted to NTFS, oh what a revolution in the industry that would be.
- Other Thoughts: Folks who don't understand why windows formats it at 465 gb capacity and complain about stuff like that really need to take a basic computer course.
Speaking of formatting - why would anyone want this in FAT, not in NTFS? The included software and documentation - I never bothered to look at it. First thing that happens is reformat. For 500 gig this might take a while, especially if you are paranoid and want to avoid quick format and check for errors with a regular format, but that's all normal.
