4 out of 5 eggsDefinitely NOT a Backup Drive

Pros: Large capacity, reliable manufacturer, good warranty

Cons: Slow transfer rates, odd case design (more pretty than functional)

Other Thoughts: I can't wait for an eSATA version of this unit!

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent drive for my purposes

Pros: Huge drive. Claims to be 30% more energy efficient and I tend to believe it. It's replacing two 750 GB hard drives that I store my music files on for a music server. Both of those drives run very hot. This drive is probably a quarter of the temperature, at least externally. Less heat generated = more efficient. By the way, I reformatted it immediately to NTFS without a problem (via Vista).

Cons: The conundrum with a big drive is that you have to have it backed up. Fortunately, I already have a back (see above) and everything that goes onto the drive will be backed up on to DVD. The transfer rate seemed a little slow (~13 MB/sec) but that could have been Vista or the other drive that was feeding it.

Other Thoughts: I wouldn't hesitate to get a few more of these babies especially as the price drops.

5 out of 5 eggsgood drive

Pros: tons of space. 1.81tb after formatting
cheap: got it for $179.99 with newegg promotional coupon
quiet
Auto-OFF when shutdown computer

Cons: NO OFF switch button
NO ethernet connection
SLOW: it took me about 6 hours to transfer 500gb of data. This is slow compare to my Seagate FreeAgent Desk 2TB
FAT32 preformat
Silly big power plug that clogs up 3 of my surge protector slots
Thick: this is almost twice the size of my Seagate FreeAgent Desk 2TB
Silly WD softwares

Other Thoughts: i am not sure why some people have a hard time formatting to NTFS. It took me less than 15 seconds (with quick format)

I have Windows XP Professional

4 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: Bought it on 9/28/2009 and it was delivered on 9/29/2009. No need to opt for the $2.99 premium processing. The formating of NTFS is great. Just follow the instructions found in WD website's knowledge database article ID 207. You really have to read it to understand how to format properly if you are a newbie. This is not your average thumb/flash drive.

Cons: Touted at 2TB. When you got it, it's only 1.8TB. So that was like 200GB missing?

Other Thoughts: Will write a more in-depth review later on.

2 out of 5 eggsComputer not Recognizing...

Pros: Great Size 1.8 TB

Cons: Computer keeps asking to format drive, case is a finger print magnet, and is slow on transfers.

Other Thoughts: I uninstall the drive and unplug it and then replug it in and it finds the drive, but is very slow and lost most of my files and corrupted some. For some reason my PS3 is the only machine that can see all the files (well the ones that it can view). I want to say it's probably the auto on and off that could be causing the issue, but I will say when it is off and you want to access the drive it does take some time to boot up when it works.

3 out of 5 eggsIt worked but tried to format

Pros: Tons of space. Good transfer rate. Great company, normally.

Cons: Tried to format to NTFS using Windows XP's format program, and it wouldn't. Tried to reformat on another computer, still nothing. Used Linux based program and it pulled up an error. I don't understand why it won't format. Tried many different directions and I've done this before with other drives.

Other Thoughts: I'm sure with RMA'ing the drive I'll be able to get a replacement, but now I'm afraid of formatting it at all. Which leaves me with a FAT32 drive that has many limits. Ah well.

5 out of 5 eggsGood drive

Pros: Lots and lots of space - runs reasonably cool - quiet. WinXP SP3 recognized it immediately, reformatted to NTFS to get past file size limit (c'mon Apple - catch up on file format!)

Cons: I can do without big lights on the front of drives - why can't we have a simple little LED to show status, instead of a light show?

Why didn't I buy this from Newegg? I'd have saved $30!

Other Thoughts: People should think before they write - this is a backup and mass storage drive, not a primary. USB is for convenience and relatively fast file transfer, not primary operating functions. If you want eSATA, spend the dime for it. Don't buy low and expect high.
