Warning - WD Smartware hard to remove
- Pros: Great to have a small 1TB drive. Much smaller size (2/3 the size) than my other Passports.
- Cons: Warning - WD has installed WD Smartware in a partition (firmware?) on this drive that is not easy to remove. They have a complicated procedure to "hide" it but I'm still looking for a way to remove and reformat the drive.
Every time you plug this drive into another computer it pops up and wants to install WD Smartware... and goes out on the internet to find drivers that it needs, if they are lacking. The drive is supposed to appear as a Virtual CD with backup software and the manual. It would have been so much better to just include the CD or put it in a folder like they have in the past. So I could choose to install it or not without the popups.
It also has a new mini-USB connector on the drive so don't lose the cable. Or buy a spare.
- Other Thoughts: Will they ever learn that we want the FULL storage for our use. Putting annoying software on an awesome 1TB drive is not cool.
On the other hand, if you want backup software and a big drive... go for it !!
I got rid of WD partition, works fine now...
- Pros: Fast Drive, Small, Durable, HUGE STORAGE
- Cons: WD Smartware
- Other Thoughts: Here is a definitive removal of the WD Smartware that I tried and it worked:
1. Plug the drive in and boot the computer with the Windows XP install disc in the machine
2. Go to the disk select menu and delete both partitions of the drive.
3 Restart the computer and reformat the drive
4. It Works!

1TB Nice Drive
- Pros: - Gives ample storage space to move data around.
- WD provides Firmware manager software to "hide" VCD (Virtual CD) drive.
- Once hidden using Firmware manager, VCD does not show up while connecting to other PC's.
- Very handy to carry.
- Cons: - Smart Backup manager software is useless. I would rather prefer not to install it even though this gives an undetected device in the device manager.
- Since the additional backup manager option is embedded into firmware and attached to bulit in HW device, it wouldn't go away even by virtue of formatting the HDD.
- No e-SATA port options. Have to live with USB.
- Other Thoughts: - There is recent firmware updates provided by WD, ensure this is applied prior to "hiding" VCD.
- This product would have been even better if shipped without VCD and backup manager options.
Extremely Annoying
- Pros: Small size...quiet
- Cons: Comes with a firmware installed virtual CD drive that is a pain to delete.
Gets extremely warm when ran for long periods.
Uses a micro USB cable ... so to use this as well as older WD USB drives I have to carry two cables.
Data transfer is not nearly as fast as previous WD USB HDDs

- Cons: None
- Other Thoughts: I did a lot of reading about this drive before I bought it. It seems most of the negative comments are related to two issues: 1) WD SmartWare Software w/ Virtual CD and 2) Loose usb cable connection. Western Digital has addressed both issues. A firmware and software update will allow you to disable the Virtual CD and opt not to install the WD sofware. (www.wdc.com) The whole process took less than 10 minutes. The usb cable that came with my drive connects tightly. From what I read, most of the newer drives come with the new and improved cable, but if you find your connection is loose and easily disconnected, WD will send out a new cable if you call them.
I didn't mind having to update the firmware as long as WD gave me the option of not installing their software. Customers want choices. Most people simply want the extra storage in an external drive. Then, if needed, let them choose the backup or cloning software they prefer.
A terabyte (930GB) in my pocket. Can't beat that!
