Features
Killer speed - SATA 6 Gb/s interface and 32 MB cache enhance the next generation 10,000 RPM WD VelociRaptor making it up to 15% faster than the award-winning previous generation.

Monstrous capacity - WD VelociRaptor SATA drives are available in capacities up to 600 GB, double the capacity of the previous generation.

Rock-solid reliability - Designed and manufactured to mission-critical enterprise-class standards to provide enterprise reliability in high duty cycle environments. With 1.4 million hours MTBF, these drives have the highest available reliability rating on a high capacity SATA drive.

Ultra-cool operation - Consumes less idle power and uses similar active power as the previous generation WD VelociRaptor, while offering double the capacity and higher performance.

IcePack mounting frame - The 2.5-inch WD VelociRaptor is enclosed in a backplane-ready 3.5-inch enterprise-class mounting frame with a built-in heat sink that keeps this powerful little drive extra cool when installed in high-performance desktop chassis.

Rotary Acceleration Feed Forward (RAFF) - Optimizes operation and performance when the drives are used in vibration-prone, multi-drive chassis.

NoTouch ramp load technology - The recording head never touches the disk media ensuring significantly less wear to the recording head and media as well as better drive protection in transit.

Environmentally conscious - In addition to being ROHS compliant, this generation of WD VelociRaptor is also a halogen-free design.

1 out of 5 eggsDead after 3 months

Pros: Fast drive while it worked. It was used in a web server that served basic content files over an intranet.

Cons: After 3 months, Event Viewer was flooded with drive errors claiming bad sectors. Thankfully, we added a new drive and moved the data, 2 days later it died.

Replacing it with another WD product but hopefully the 1TD red edition will have better reliability.

I would not trust this hard drive with any data that you haven't backed up.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Product

Pros: Decent drive. Using it as a backup to a SSD. Haven't gotten much of a chance to mess around with the clock speeds on it to see how fast it loads date compared to a SSD. Have no complaints with the set up of the drive and WD has never failed me before!

Cons: None.

4 out of 5 eggsBuy for size not speed

Pros: Larger capacity drive, excellent Raptor reputation, good speed/capacity value.

Cons: Stream and response speed is less than 1/2 that of a SSD, then again, so is cost per meg/gig

Other Thoughts: SSD has come a long way in the aspect of storage value. For larger needs, SSD is not there for the recreational user like myself, this is where the WD VoliciRaptor comes in

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I own *4x [four] of these now!

Eggcellent off HighPoint RocketRAID 640 or 620 in any configuration (single-volume/JBOD, RAID10, RAID1, RAID5 and RAID0)

best option for virtualizing with VMware vSphere Server/ESXi (the newer velocirpators use 4KB sectors, 64-bit LBA etc. which isn't properly supported by VMware yet; the terabyte velociraptor is a better choice for Hyper-V)

Cons: price?

4 out of 5 eggsFinally Got One.

Pros: Amazing Specifications!

Cons: Read-Write Activity Noise!!!

Other Thoughts: I went from two WDC2503ABYX drives in RAID0 to this... Speeds about the same although I got 6.0 WEI with the old setup on an AM3+ 990FX mobo. The increase in noise is the only negative. When this thing is working, it makes an annoying sound when its reading/writing... It's not the spindle... It's not a clicking... You can hear this noise on most hard drives but it is seemingly a little amplified in my case with this drive. The drive is secured in a NZXT Phantom case and not loose in any way. Still a great drive so far.

3 out of 5 eggsNice Drive But Pricey

Pros: Its faster than a 7200RPM drive

Cons: For its price its just not fast enough.

Other Thoughts: Windows experience only rated this drive at a 4.2 while everything else in my computer was in the 7 range. I was very disappointed in this drive for this reason. If your looking for speed just buy an SSD. I did and it was the best thing I ever did. Now this drive is my data drive that I have all my other stuff on along side the SSD that runs my OS.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Performance Platter-Based Storage

Pros: - Very fast for a mechanical drive, with Sequential Speeds of around 150MBs Average
- Extremely Fast seek times, with average latency of online 7.4ms!
- "Icepack" heatsink actually works
- Function equally well as single drives, in software RAID (FakeRAID), and in Hardware RAID
- Excellent drive to keep your Page file on to save writes on your SSD
- Great game drive

Cons: - High cost per gigabyte
- The new 1TB version is noticeably faster (182MBs, 7.1ms)
- Despite being a 2.5" drive, you have to use an entire 3.5" bay
- Really requires RAID to truly shine

Other Thoughts: I have been using VelociRaptors for my RAID arrays for many years, and currently I have two arrays, one consisting of these 600GB drives, and another that is being built up with 1TB models.

I am running an Areca 24i PCI-E3.0 x8 RAID Controller Card with 4GB DDR3 cache and NAND/Capacitor Backup, with 14 of these drives currently hooked up. It's setup as RAID0, with 7x WD RE 4TB HDDs in RAID6 on the same controller using some of their space for array backups.
This is off an X79-based workstation, and my gaming computer communicates via Dual Intel hardware Gigabit NICs.

The RAID0 array puts out 833MBs Sequential and has an average access timeof 5.8ms. IIt's fast enough to saturate the dual-Gb connection twice over.

I have to use my 2x 512GB OCZ VECTOR RAID0 to keep peak transfer rates!

Oh, and in 5 years, never lost a single VelociRaptor.

If you want extremely high sequential speeds, check out the 1TB WD10EZEX. Absolutely astonishing drive!

4 out of 5 eggs4 out of 5 Eggs

Pros: A high performance HDD that's a bit cheaper then any SSD's out there of course! Surprised by how much smaller it is also.

Cons: The HDD doesn't preform in the manner that it should. Difficultly installing Windows 7 Professional 64-bit; made over 11 attempts to install till finally able to do so. Slow/sluggish response time (delay between 20 sec-1 minute) on opening applications of any kind. Ran both Western Digital Data LifeGuard Diag, and Windows chkdsk; came back clear but still unknown to why the HDD acts slow to boot, or in use.

Other Thoughts: Because of this problem i just decided to sent it back and get a refund. First time I've ever had an issue with a Western Digital HDD! But you can't win them all lol.

5 out of 5 eggsNice HDD

Pros: Faster response time than the 7200 rpm one I replaced. I picked it up when Newegg was running a special for around $100. Usually these are a lot more expensive.

Cons: None thus far.
