High Failure Rate
- Pros: Cheap. $1 per 3GB's of space.
- Cons: Had 4 of these drives for my PC over the last year. 1 was DOA, returned it got a replacement and it died after 5 months. Bought another 2 for a different computer and both are slowing down. I keep my hardware properly cooled and maintained with hard drive cooling units on each hard drive and great ventalation. These drives are a peice of junk and have a very high failure rate.
- Other Thoughts: You get what you pay for. This is a cheap drive, with a high failure rate and short life span.
Good value, but beware heat
- Pros: Inexpensive. Return policy was painless.
- Cons: These drives generate a lot of heat and have little tolerance for it. I've had several issues with them failing temporarily, and one died completely (as noted above Maxtor replaced it without issue).
- Other Thoughts: You will need to put some thought into managing heat with these drives, especially if they're installed as part of a RAID or in a system that runs hotter then normal.
GOOD WHILE IT LASTED
- Pros: For the price at the time, a very good value. Easy install with no problems
- Cons: Only lasted about 4 months before it died.
- Other Thoughts: The hard drive in my other computer is the same one it came with back in 1997 and I have never had any problems with it, so thats what I am comparing this one too. In comparison, this Maxtor drive failed big time. 4 months as opposed to 9 years. I am in the process of calling Maxtor and see what they can do. I do not expect much since its OEM and I did not pay for any type of extended warrenty. Oh well...easy come, easy go I guess. It worked great while it lasted.
