The Western Digital Caviar SE Hard Drive is a clear leader in the race for the peak of desktop drives. Its 120 GB runs at 7200 RPM with up to 100 MB/s transfer rates. Its breakthrough 8 MB cache makes this hard drive suitable for high-performance home and business computing, as it can handle both data-intensive applications and high-end multimedia applications. It offers average latency of 4.2 ms with an average seek time of only 8.9ms; and average write time of 10.9ms, resulting in both greater efficiency and safer data transfer

This hard drive incorporates WD’s Data Lifeguard, an exclusive set of data protection features, including shock protection, environmental protection, real-time embedded error detection and repair. Its mechanism ensures automatic discovery, isolation, and repair of problems which may develop in a hard drive.

Despite a remarkable data transfer rate, WD's WhisperDrive makes the drive almost silent. The most common hard drive failure is due to shocks: ShockGuard protects the drive against damage from bumps and vibrations, and the stainless steel casing completes the protection, keeping it safe up to 250Gs whileworking, and 900Gs idle. Its SoftSeek technology offers smooth operation of read/write seek function, reducing seek noise, while the DuraStep Ramp technology locks the heads in a secured position, even when power is off.

  • newegg Ultra ATA 100 Interface The Ultra ATA 100 interface provides up to 100 MB/s throughput for fast data transfer.
  • newegg WD WhisperDrive and SoftSeek Technology WhisperDrive technology minimizes noise to virtually below the threshold of human hearing. To cut seek noise, SoftSeek technology streamlines read/write seeking algorithms resulting in more efficient operation.
  • newegg WD Data Lifeguard Technology Exclusive Data Lifeguard data protection features include shock protection, an environmental protection system and real-time embedded error detection and repair. WD's Data Lifeguard technology automatically finds, isolates and repairs problems that may develop over the life of a hard drive.
  • newegg WD ShockGuard Technology ShockGuard technology instantaneously protects the hard drive against damage from bumps and vibrations during operation. This technology enables WD Caviar drives to achieve industry-leading shock protection specs.

5 out of 5 eggs10 years old in July 2013

Pros: 7200rpm standard IDE Hard drive. Reliable makes an excellent OS boot drive in a multi hard drive system. Exactly what I use it for.

Cons: It owes me nothing. 10 years old in July 2013.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy a huge hard drive for the OS, get one big enough. The OS will be faster on the dedicated drive like this.

1 out of 5 eggs4 Years

Pros: Worked just fine for 4 years.

Cons: Died after 4 years....

Other Thoughts: I have used perhaps 20 IDE hard drives over the past 10 years and out of those, 5 western digital drives have failed, 1 Mxxxor, 0 Sxxxate. Others were removed in working order for various reasons (storage space). Have had a mix of drives the whole time.

Guess I am now sold on Sxxxate Barracuda for IDE and SATA drives.

5 out of 5 eggsI want another.

Pros: Very quiet, Quick (for ATA/100), lasted longer than 3 months...haha. 120gb is quite a bit of storage for the price. Lasted 3 years before it had its first problem with spinning up. 3 months later, its gone. :(

Cons: ATA/100, it refused to spin up the day after the warranty expired. Great timing huh.

Other Thoughts: RIP :(

3 out of 5 eggsworks but loud

Pros: It works like it should for 4 years already. :)

Cons: Has become increasing loud with a loud whine.

Other Thoughts: Quite a reliable drive after purchasing it in 2003. It still works fine with daily use. What was slightly noisy became increasingly so to unbearable proportions. Louder than everything in my case.

2 out of 5 eggsI hate the warranty.

Pros: Worked well when it worked.

Cons: Loud... corrupted.

Other Thoughts: Worked just fine for a year and 2 months. Now that the year long warranty's over, it's done for. So frustrating.
