The Western Digital Caviar SE Hard Drive is a clear leader in the race for the peak of desktop drives. Its 80 GB runs at 7200 RPM with up to 100 MB/s transfer rates. Its breakthrough 8 MB cache makes this hard drive suitable for high-performance home and business computing, as it can handle both data-intensive applications and high-end multimedia applications. It offers average latency of 4.2 ms with an average seek time of only 8.9ms, and an average write time of 10.9ms, resulting in both greater efficiency and safer data transfer.

This hard drive incorporates WD’s Data Lifeguard, an exclusive set of data protection features, including shock protection, environmental protection, real-time embedded error detection and repair. Its mechanism ensures automatic discovery, isolation, and repair of problems which may develop in a hard drive.

Despite a remarkable data transfer rate, WD's WhisperDrive makes the drive almost silent. The most common hard drive failure is due to shocks: ShockGuard protects the drive against damage from bumps and vibrations, and the stainless steel casing completes the protection, keeping it safe up to 250Gs while working, and 900Gs idle. Its SoftSeek technology offers smooth operation of read/write seek function, reducing seek noise, while the DuraStep Ramp technology locks the heads in a secured position, even when power is off.

  • newegg Ultra ATA 100 Interface The Ultra ATA 100 interface provides up to 100 MB/s throughput for fast data transfer.
  • newegg WD WhisperDrive and SoftSeek Technology WhisperDrive technology minimizes noise to virtually below the threshold of human hearing. To cut seek noise, SoftSeek technology streamlines read/write seeking algorithms resulting in more efficient operation.
  • newegg WD Data Lifeguard Technology Exclusive Data Lifeguard data protection features include shock protection, an environmental protection system and real-time embedded error detection and repair. WD's Data Lifeguard technology automatically finds, isolates and repairs problems that may develop over the life of a hard drive.
  • newegg WD ShockGuard Technology ShockGuard technology instantaneously protects the hard drive against damage from bumps and vibrations during operation. This technology enables WD Caviar drives to achieve industry-leading shock protection specs.

1 out of 5 eggsObsolescent

Pros: Does the job circa 2008. I own several from older builds.

This drive has too little capacity for the price. You'd do better with a ore recent product with greater capacity, cache, SATA 3 capabilities. Or if you have this price level to spend, get an SSD for greater speed.

Cons: - You can get a much faster 240 GB SSD for this price.
- You can get a 4TB HDD for this price.

5 out of 5 eggsBest ever...

Pros: It's a Caviar Black Label, it's a Western Digital...That's all you need to know when buying a WDC drive, or any HD. See my review of the WD6401AALS...the 800JB is in that review.

Cons: It's out of production...They don't die ! Of course, if it was a Seafoam HD, it'd be dead as a doornail by now.

The 1st 800JB is still running, since 2002! That's 12 years.

Other Thoughts: Caviar+Black Label, plus large cache, RPM, is it. And if it's made by Western Digital, then you have the best HD that money can buy. Period.

Ohh, and Newegg rocks! But we all know that.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Hard drive, fast and reliable

Pros: Fast hard drive (considering the technology it was built with). Good size built in cache. Very stable and reliable. Newegg did a great job delivering it quickly.

Cons: None, after many years of using it.

Other Thoughts: I bought and used several such HDDs over the years. They all went through a decent amount of usage, without any serious "hichups". I have seen even more of these running on frinds' machines, and very few having problems.

5 out of 5 eggsHad two for five years now.

Pros: Decent speed and capacity

Cons: Old IDE connectors.

Other Thoughts: It's a good hard drive. One of the few that have lasted for me. Just saw that there were no reviews here so I thought I'd write one and let people know how long mine has lasted.

5 out of 5 eggsStubbornly continues to run

Pros: -extremely long lifespan
-extremely reliable
-still running after 9 years of use, with the past 5 being near non-stop operation

Cons: -slow by today's standards
-storage space value continues to drop, may retire it in the next few years.

Other Thoughts: Around exactly this time 9 years ago this harddrive was bought to serve as extra storage to my then-256MB memory, 1.7ghz celeron system under Windows ME.

Fast forward 9 years into the future, it is currently holding my Win7x64 SP1 operating system on a 7GB RAM, 2.7Ghz dual core machine with 1.2TB storage across 4 harddrives.

Since about 2005 the machine has been running near-constantly with very rare maintenance or extended power failures. It NEVER once lost data or exhibited any problems. In fact, the IDE cable it was connected through, as old as the drive itself, started throwing errors and needed replacement 2 years ago. The CABLE - with no moving parts - died of old age before the harddrive!

Ofcourse each produced unit has its own unpredictable specifics, but personally I would trust this drive with anything and everything, as long as it can fit into 76GB.

An outstanding example of durability, scoring 5.2 on the Win7 WEI. The only likely reason to replace it would be sp

5 out of 5 eggsThis Hard Drive Just Keeps Going!

Pros: I have probably been using the WD800JB-00ETA0 80 gigabyte hard drive for over 6 years. It is still working! I use it to backup data and run the Linux Ubuntu 10.04 operating system. I shut my computer off at night and so that may be a contributing factor to the longevity.

Cons: Makes a little more noise than newer generation hard drives. The sound really is quite minimal though.

5 out of 5 eggs8 years and still going strong

Pros: I bought this drive for $125 back in 2002, and it's seen me through multiple rebuilds, OS installs, and physical moves. It's time to retire this sturdy drive as the system partition when my 120GB SSD shows up. In a few more months, it will be completely retired when I get a 1TB+ hard drive to replace this and the two other WDs (both 5+ years old). Thanks WD for your durable and obviously over-spec'd products.

Cons: It's still only 80GB? Seriously, there are none.

Other Thoughts: Have never gone wrong with WD hard drives. It's really too bad they haven't figured out the SSD market yet.

1 out of 5 eggs90 Day Wonder

Pros: Worked for three months.

Cons: Only worked for three months.

Other Thoughts: Now makes a clicking/grinding/beeping noise and doesn't work! Was used under very average conditions, room temp., a few hours a day.

3 out of 5 eggsBEWARE

Pros: So far its still working-occasional
hd hits on "system Mechanic".

Cons: Beware-when I installed this,it ALREADY had 2 partitions on the drive and NOT by me. WD.com said this is not normal on a NEW drive. I could have been sent a USED HD. Newegg said although it shipped just in bubblewrap,no box,no instructions,no Cd or diskette-it was new. Caution, just my experience.
