The Western Digital Scorpio 80GB (WD800VE) hard drive delivers best-in-class performance with lower power needs when compared to other notebook drives. You'll get the quietest 2.5-inch drive on the market with real-time data protection technology to care for your records, games and pictures. This compact drive, with an 8MB cache buffer, rotates at a speed of 5400 RPM, but with a power curve of a 4200RPM drive. Its average seek time is only 12ms and average latency is 5.5ms
Despite a remarkable data transfer rate of up to 100MB/sec, WD's WhisperDrive makes the drive almost silent. The most common hard drive failure is due to shocks: ShockGuard protects the drive against damage from bumps and vibrations, and the stainless steel casing completes the protection, keeping it safe up to 250Gs while working, and 900Gs idle. Its SoftSeek technology offers smooth operation of read/write seek function, reducing seek noise, while the DuraStep Ramp technology locks the heads in a secured position, even when power is off. This is a full-featured drive in a tiny package, and a great offering from Western Digital!

The best 5k rpm notebook drive
- Comments: I did one research in Internet before I tokk a decision to buy this notebook HDD. I used 5400 prm Toshiba (60GB, 2 dead drives within 6 months), then I ordered 7200 rpm IBM HDD from NewEgg. It was a little bit faster, but it was very hot and the head "Clicks" every 10-15 seconds, which is not so good when you have quiet Centrino. Then I bough 5400prm Fujitsu 40GB - very quiet and cold drive, but too small. Seagate have 5 yesr warranty, but it's too expensive and slow. Samsung is good, but the warranty is only 1 year and I still can't trust this vendor, even I'm using Samsungs in my desktop. And I bought Western Digital Scorpio with 8MB cashe.
It's amazing hard drive - extremly quiet, absolutely cold and fast. Believe me, I never had notebook HDD like this before, I tested enough drivers through my 15 year long IT career! I ordered it on Sunday evening, got it on Wednesday. Of course, NewEgg price is the best. What else do you need?!? Order it :-)
Excellent!!!
- Pros: Fast 2X to 3X faster than OEM, yes XP boots in half to one-third the time now. Quiet...No, SILENT!...Vibration free. Runs cool, only 48c after stress benchmark. Lower power usage.
No clicking mentioned in any previous posts. Works perfectly so far.
I went away from WD last few years as I thought they were lagging in Quality, performance, gig per dollar ratio. This is my 2nd Western Digital drive in as many months, a 320gb SATA drive for Media Center PC build, and this one for aging Dell laptop. Both have been excellent values, outstanding performance, quiet, cool running, and great $ for gig ratio. They are back on top, and I am with them 100% again.
- Cons: None.
Adding this canceled my plans for new laptop, I have one now with this drive.
- Other Thoughts: Bought to replace IBM 20MB 4200rpm Travelstar OEM drive in Dell Latitude C810.
Unbelievable performance upgrade with this HD. Sisoft Benchmarked 30mbs data transfer/9ms seek. OEM hard drive it replaced was 10mbs trnsfr/19 seek. Excellent replacement drive for failed OEM. If your old one works, take it out, put it in USB enclosure and use it as back up/storage to this one. You will get a new laptop for 65 bucks :)

its ait
- Pros: its pretty fast and when i got it, popped in there... put xp on it and there we go
- Cons: get hot, vibrates a little and every once in a while it makes clicking noises.. pretty weird
- Other Thoughts: decent hard drive
Dont Buy Western Digital
- Pros: Easy Install
- Cons: The quality of Western Digital products has decreased to a point where you are a fool to trust them. In the last 5 years I have had too many fail. I am switching over to Seagate. They used to have a 3 year warranty and stood behind their product. Now, even if you have a product in warranty period they claim your out of warranty.
Quick Delevery
- Pros: Very prompt service.
- Cons: Not evident.

Quiet - WD's exclusive WhisperDrive technology with SoftSeek algorithms make this the quietest 2.5-inch hard drive, regardless of spin speed. Reliable - WD's ShockGuard technology protects the drive mechanics and platter surfaces from shocks. WD's DuraStep Ramp locks the heads in a secure position away from the disk to provide another layer of protection when the drive is not in use. Utilizing the most technologically advanced material available, the drive can perform a minimum of 600,000 load/unload cycles without contamination - up to twice the performance of its competitors. Rugged - WD Scorpio's rigid stainless steel top cover withstands more than 5 pounds of pressure - nearly 1.5 times the industry average - without pinching vital internal components. |
