5 out of 5 eggsStill chugging along with zero issues

Pros: Figured I'd drop another quick review, to let people see just how reliable Western Digital hard drives are.

Cons: lol ya right

Other Thoughts: Bought these drives brand new in November 2005, here it is over y years later, & these drives are still running perfectly. Have moved them from 1 system to a second system, used always as main drives running in RAID 0, system runs 24/7/365, & these drives are STILL running just like they did when they were new.

Once a year I run a drive test for bad sectors, etc., & they have always come back clean, 100% healthy. You can't get much more reliable than this.

For those building new systems, or needing to add HDD space for storage, take it from a pc builder with over 20yrs experience building custom systems, you can't go wrong with Western Digital. These drives more than prove than point.

2 out of 5 eggsWD used to pwn nubs

Pros: This drive worked great for about a year and a half.

Cons: It died. Started with a buzzing noise that just became louder and more frequent.

Other Thoughts: I admit, the drive was in operation 24/7 and during it was seeking during the entire time, but my other WD (ATA) HDs have been in operation for close to six years now with no problem.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Drive

Pros: Nice, quiet drive. Ample space for someone that does not have alot of music or video files.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I've been a WD customer since the 5 1/4" days, Winchester anyone? I've used some other brands of drives before, but have always been dissapointed, never with a WD.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: I like WD products but..

Cons: DOA

Other Thoughts: I know OEM means it's kinda just the product alone but.. this thing didn't even come with a jumper cap, I had to steal one from one of my older hard drives... either way it didn't work, didn't run at all, just dead. Was wrapped in bubble wrap in a huge box with other parts, and no anti-static bag. Have to RMA...

3 out of 5 eggsit's just a hard disk

Pros: It is cheap, it is SATA 2.0, it is very quiet, and if you're not storing your music and movies on it, it's actually a pretty big drive.

Cons: Performance is poor. Here's what hdparm says about it under Linux:
Cached reads:
930 MB in 2.00 seconds = 464.44 MB/sec

Buffered disk reads:
182 MB in 3.00 seconds = 60.64 MB/sec

Other Thoughts: This is no speed demon but it works, and it doesn't chatter at me, so I suppose I would buy it again. Though I'd probably pay a bit more for a faster drive even if it were the same size.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed After 10 Months

Pros: Fast, Easy to install. Neweggs service.

Cons: Drive failed after 10 months of use. It stopped reporting SMART information. I ran the WD diag utilities and it still would not report any info. According to WD, replace the drive.

Other Thoughts: I'm currently in the RMA process with WD. I expected more from this drive. It was rather noisy. I have since replaced with a 320GB Seagate SATA.

Cons: It is quite quiet.

Other Thoughts: It IS all that and a bag of chips!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

Pros: I use this drive in an external USB 2 enclosure to backup everything to. So far it has worked absolutely flawlessly. Western Digital makes very reliable drives, and this has been going through 50 GBs of backups copied to it every single night for almost a year without a problem.

Cons: Can tick a little bit, but not that bad (still passes SMART tests with flying colors, apparently it's the norm for these to tick a little under pressure)

Other Thoughts: Shipping was fast, great product priced right...can't go wrong.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Value

Pros: Very easy to set up, as all SATA Drives are. Quite fast, although there are obviously faster HDDs for a lot more money. Definately great value for a great product.

Cons: A bit on the loud side, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Other Thoughts: I had them set up in RAID for a couple days and it was extremely fast, although I set it back to regular SATA just to prevent complication.
