The Western Digital Caviar SE Hard Drive is a clear leader in the race for the peak of desktop drives. Its 160 GB runs at 7200 RPM with up to 100 MB/s transfer rates. Its breakthrough 8 MB cache makes this hard drive suitable for high-performance home and business computing, as it can handle both data-intensive and high-end multimedia applications. It offers average latency of 4.2 ms, an average seek time of only 8.9ms, and an average write time of 10.9ms, resulting in both greater efficiency and safer data transfer.

This hard drive incorporates WD’s Data Lifeguard, an exclusive set of data protection features, including shock protection, environmental protection, real-time embedded error detection and repair. Its mechanism ensures automatic discovery, isolation, and repair of problems which may develop in a hard drive.

Despite a remarkable data transfer rate, WD's WhisperDrive makes the drive almost silent. The most common hard drive failure is due to shocks: ShockGuard protects the drive against damage from bumps and vibrations, and the stainless steel casing completes the protection, keeping it safe up to 250Gs while working, and 900Gs idle. Its SoftSeek technology offers smooth operation of read/write seek function, reducing seek noise, while the DuraStep Ramp technology locks the heads in a secured position, even when power is off.

  • newegg SATA 3.0 Gb/s Interface The next-generation SATA interface supports up to 3.0 Gb/s data transfer rates, Native Command Queuing (NCQ) and hot-pluggable point-to-point connections to allow the Western Digital Caviar SE WD1600JS to deliver optimum performance, efficiency, convenience and flexibility.
  • newegg WD WhisperDrive and SoftSeek Technology WhisperDrive technology minimizes noise to virtually below the threshold of human hearing. To cut seek noise, SoftSeek technology streamlines read/write seeking algorithms resulting in more efficient operation.
  • newegg WD Data Lifeguard Technology Exclusive Data Lifeguard data protection features include shock protection, an environmental protection system and real-time embedded error detection and repair. WD's Data Lifeguard technology automatically finds, isolates and repairs problems that may develop over the life of a hard drive.
  • newegg WD ShockGuard Technology ShockGuard technology instantaneously protects the hard drive against damage from bumps and vibrations during operation. This technology enables WD Caviar drives to achieve industry-leading shock specifications.

1 out of 5 eggsDont trust it!

Pros: relatively cheap for when i bought it.

Cons: I could never get the sata power plugins to work.
Not a good long term storage solution.

Other Thoughts: I have 2 of these and both of them are dead now. One of them is only accessible using a pricey disk recovery program, the other is losing sectors faster than I can copy files off of it.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: OEM installed and rock-solid stable through four years and six months, three moves, a case change, and at least four reformats.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I'm reviewing a product that can no longer be purchased. But hey, it's a good drive.

1 out of 5 eggsFAILED DRIVE

Pros: Looks Nice

Cons: Drive failed instantly when attempting to format it. Can't give it 0 stars.

Other Thoughts: I have never had a hard drive fail faster than this one. I have also had problems with WD hard drives in the past. They fail often. I have switched over to Samsung.

2 out of 5 eggsNot the best drive

Pros: low price

Cons: I bought this drive while I was building my brother-in-law's computer a few months ago, and not long after, the drive developed several bad sectors and the OS refused to boot. I was only able to recover a fraction of his data.

Other Thoughts: Thanks to newegg, the drive was successfully RMA'd and a new, hopefully more stable drive was delivered.

1 out of 5 eggs2 out of 2 ain't bad...oh wait

Pros: One of them worked for about 9 weeks.

Cons: I ordered 2 originally, but one came preloaded with bad sectors. The second one has lasted me almost two months, but it appears to be developing the same bad sectors.

Other Thoughts: I would normally think something else was wrong with my computer in these situations, but my 500GB WD is in full working order.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Its cheap

Cons: Well you get what you pay for. All in all I purchased 3 of these and had to rma 2. 1 was DOA and 1 failed within a month. Not the kind of Quality Control one would like.

Other Thoughts: While I am not sure if its the NVidia Nforce 4 chipset raid drivers or these disks the combination of those 2 in a mirrored raid results in data corruption. I have had to manually sync the disks 6x this last month. Eventually I just disconnected 1.
