The Hitachi Travelstar series of hard drives is a solid industry leader in performance and reliability. The 5K100 100GB model is a second-generation wonder that offers extreme data throughput, thanks to a lively 5400rpm spindle speed, but that sizzle doesn’t translate to waste heat because the 5K100 uses sufficiently less power than other drives that the extra heat isn’t generated to begin with! Hitachi’s own battery life extender technology, a power management suite allowing you to extend battery life and power consumption, keeps things calm and quiet, too, with a low power idle of less than a watt.

Like all notebook drives, this rugged road warrior is capable of handling the thumps and bumps of everyday use, thanks to an actuator/suspension system which allows the drive to resist up to 300Gs of operating shock, 1,000Gs of non-operating shock, and over 600,000 load/unload cycles. The drive is RoHS (Restriction of certain Hazardous Substances) compliant, as part of Hitachi's environmental conservation initiative. The Travelstar 5K100 100GB drive is a true winner!

  • newegg Ultra ATA 100 (ATA-6) Interface The Ultra ATA 100 interface provides up to 100 MB/s throughput for fast data transfer.
  • newegg Hitachi Enhanced ABLE Technology Hitachi's unique Enhanced Adaptive Battery Life Extender (ABLE) technology enables the 5K100 series drives to achieve as much as a 67% reduction in power consumption.

5 out of 5 eggsserves me well

Pros: 100 GB/5,400 RPM vs the old 30 GB/4,400 RPM in my Dell Inspiron 5100. Even though it's only 1,000 RPM faster but it's a big difference! The Windows XP Pro boots up much quicker now!

Cons: No complaints so far as of now...

Other Thoughts: When it's getting hard to maintain disk space in my Dell Inspiron 5100 after the Windows XP Pro SP2 update, then I decided to replace the stock 30 GB HDD for something much bigger with same brand and interface (Hitachi ATA-something) and I found this HDD at very good price for to extend the life of my laptop for a few more years (hopefully!)

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: fast, reliable, hasnt clicked or died on me yet

Cons: none whatssoever

Other Thoughts: i use this for an external hdd coupled with a vantec nexstar3 case and i carry it with me everywhere i go. i run applications off it and even play movies directly off it and it is very fast and responsive, (as long as you're using usb 2.0) you can't really tell a difference going with 7200 rpm unless you're copying very large files > 1 GB

4 out of 5 eggsNot Bad

Pros: Good Bang for your buck.

Havn't had any problems.

Cons: Fairly Loud. It's still faily quiet compared to other drivers, but itslouder than the Samsung drive that was replaced.

5 out of 5 eggsComing from 4200rpm, this sucker flies.

Pros: Coming from 4200rpm notebook hard drives, this sucker flies.

The performance increase is surprisingly significant.

Great price point + value for those upgrading from "default factory" notebook hard drives.

Cons: None! Heat and noise come with the territory and are to be expected. Noise isn't a concern, and there are hotter notebook parts anyway.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Good Hardrive

Pros: Inexpensive, reliable and large size. Great performance for the price! Perfect for my Dell Inspiron 9300

Cons: Noisier than the 40GB Toshiba HD that was replaced.

Other Thoughts: As always, very fast shipping and great prices on item and shipping rates from Newegg.com. As long as those two factors continue I will be always back!
