3 out of 5 eggsAverage hard drive

Pros: Seems to have good speed, very large data storage is always good.

Cons: Drive is pretty loud, I haven't owned a drive this loud in a long time. Then again, this is also the first 500 GB I've purchased, so I'm not sure what the average noise level for these drives are.

5 out of 5 eggsPure excellence

Pros: Excellent drive, despite what others say it is not very loud, and it is even faster than my slightly older 7200.10 model.
(Slightly better access times)
writing this review with this drive as my windows drive as we speak.

Cons: None Yet! (and I'm hoping for none in the future hehe)

Other Thoughts: Newegg came through again! And now that ups does the whole guaranteed in 2 business days shipping, it's even better than it was! Came in 2 business days too. Newegg for the win.

1 out of 5 eggsSeagate 500 gb 7200.9

Pros: Nice drive, fairly quiet. Good price.

Cons: Failed after 11 months of gathering 300 gb of priceless data and family pictures. Fortunately I had a backup, but still irks me.

Other Thoughts: This is the second seagate failure on my computers in 3 months, both were 7200.9 series. Hopefully my 7200.10's last longer. Don't forget to have a backup plan as all hard drives will fail at some point!

4 out of 5 eggsGood product for the price

Pros: 1. Cheap
2. Good Performance for the price

Cons: 1. Relatively loud

Other Thoughts: I bought this hard drive a few weeks ago as a back up drive for my desktop computer. The drive is working pretty well, I don't have much problems with it so far except that it is a little bid louder than I expected. This is my first purchase of internal hard drive and first purchase at Newegg. Good product, good price, extremely fast delivery, will definitely buy again.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent; and, correction to "7% lost when formatting" rule

Pros: Bought 2, they've worked just fine in external cases (the eSATA card I bought turned out the be issue with one of them not being seen on it; a USB2 connection works fine though).

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: To respond to someone else's "7% lost when formatting" rule, formatting is absolutely not the cause of the apparent loss in capacity.

Drive manufacturers began one-upmanship back in the 90s by stating that "one MB = 1,000,000 bytes" which makes sense when thinking metrically but is NOT the way a MB is defined by computers, which is 1024 * 1024 bytes or 1,048,576 bytes (because it's a power of two, not 10).

Using powers of 10, it "seems" bigger, and once one manufacturer started doing it, the rest fell in line. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mebibyte for more information.

Note that if the power-of-ten value had ended up LESS than the power-of-two value, the marketers at the drive manufacturers would NOT have decided that "in SI units, mega means a million" and used power-of-ten numbers; for this reason, their argument is specious. However, instead of correcting them, the IEC defined Mebibyte as a power-of-two notation in 1998.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA and killed my hot-swap bay

Pros: None so far. Was good price when I got it except the dead hot swap bay made up for what I saved plus more.

Cons: DOA. Plugged this into a working hot-swap bay and sparked and died. Took out my bay with it. I didn't know HDDs can kill other hardware - especially one of a reputable brand like Seagate. I would buy again (I still like Seagates) but first test on a cheap motherboard or swap bay before connecting it my expensive equipment.

Other Thoughts: I appreciate the very fast RMA response from Newegg - on a 4th of July nonetheless.

5 out of 5 eggs2 out of 3 ain't bad

Pros: Fast. Good warranty. Good value drive. 1.5Gb Jumper easy to remove with a micro screwdriver or tooth pick.

Cons: Had a 3 drive RAID and one of these drives failed in about 6 months. Cost <censored> to ship back for warranty. No data loss (because of RAID) but did wonder why it took so long to fail.

Other Thoughts: From all the reports of failed drives and personal experience, I would NOT recommend this as a solo drive. Use 2 for mirror or use in RAID.

5 out of 5 eggsUnderstanding Hard drive capacity

Pros: No I dont own this drive but I had to comment regarding actual usable space. Please read my other thoughts.

Cons: NONE I do have 4 200 GB Seagate drives from 1-4 years old. I have never had a problem with any of them.

Other Thoughts: I had to write this after reading multiple reviews from people complaining about the actual amount of available storage after formating the drive. The scary part is most of them claimed to have a high technical understanding of hard drives. ok here it is hard drives 101.... very simple . whatever size hard drive you buy subtract 7% that is what you will lose once it is formatted. So for a 500 GB drive you will end up with 465 GB of usable space. So for all the sceptics & doubters sorry to disappoint you but Seagate is not trying to deceive you, that is the industry standard.

4 out of 5 eggsA tad clicky but still nice

Pros: Nice data access speed. Sata is nice.

Cons: It does click a bit, but defragging fixed that a LOT.

Other Thoughts: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0
3GB PNY 667Mhz DDR2 RAM
500GB Seagate Sata 2 HDD
512MB ASUS GeForce 7600GS
18x DVD RW
16x DL DVD RW
16s DVD ROM
