1 out of 5 eggsUnacceptable

Pros: large capacity, good specs, good price
bought two - one failed

Cons: Failed after 3 yrs - developed read/ write errors
5 year warrantee gets you a refurb, too many hoops
Hot!
good specs are irrelevant when you are up to 4am trying to recover data!

Other Thoughts: gotta look for another brand - failures do happen, but these seem to be failure prone and the RMA process is unacceptable.

1 out of 5 eggsBad Bad Bad

Pros: Warranty

Cons: Clickity Clack, Clickity Clack, Clickity Clack, Clickity Clack than goes Dead. Less than 2 years old, in the process of RMAing the hard drive now

Other Thoughts: Don't Buy

4 out of 5 eggsStill going

Pros: I got mine about a year ago, so far it's performance has been flawless. It's fast and quiet.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Curious about all the failures. How are people using them? Mine is kept well cooled by a cooling fan, and is only run 6-8 hours a day. I've found heat really kills drives fast.

4 out of 5 eggsWorked fine for me

Pros: Decent performance, not too loud. 1 year and counting... no failures in a RAID array online 24/7.

Cons: I wonder why everybody else is reporting clicking sounds? When will my drives fail?

Other Thoughts: Have four of these drives in a RAID array. They were purchased in early 2007. So far, so good.

1 out of 5 eggsBad and unreliable

Pros: Got the retail package from another site with a good price.

Cons: Not Reliable, period! Only moderately used it for less than 3 months and it failed. Clicking, clicking... Really hate it. Lost 300GB+ data and virtually unrecoverable. Had to spend shipping fee to send it back. And Seagate support will only replace it with a refurbished one. These manufacturer just wants our money without wanting to design a robust large capacity hard drive.

1 out of 5 eggsSeagate has really declined

Pros: Got a good price and the usual service from Newegg.

Cons: Drive died in less than a month.

Seagate support is awful so far.

Other Thoughts: Drive died after 4 weeks of use. No problem I thought, it should be easy to arrange a warranty exchange. But Seagate's website tells me the drive is 300 GB, not 400 GB. After speaking on the phone to a CSR and using the web contact form to provide a photo of the drive label, their support just keep asking me for more irrelevant info instead of checking that their database is correct. VERY unhappy with Seagate's lack of support these days.

1 out of 5 eggsReliability Issues

Pros: Performance when 7200.10 series was released

Cons: Reliability

Other Thoughts: If you've followed the reviews after Seagate's 7200.10 series launch, you probably remembered the rave comments for its performance, perpendicular recording technology and to some extent, the quietness of the drive. I purchase five 7200.10 400GB drives, four for my Infrant NAS and one as a backup. Not even six months, one of the drives failed and the backup couldn't resync. Per Infrant's tech support, I used SeaTool to test the backup drive and found it couldn't pass the quick test, simply after sitting there for 6 months. It's been a while since I experienced this type of hard drive reliability issue in 22 years of using hard drives. My last bad drive was a Western Digital drive but it failed after four years of service. These 2 drives were the retail version that I purchased locally so I won't hold NewEgg liable for the the two OEM drives I bought from them :-) . However, if two out of five drives fail in half a year, I think it says something about the product's reliability.

1 out of 5 eggsPure Garbage

Pros: Of all the drives I've owned, this one ran the coolest and was very quiet. (RIP)

Cons: "Made in China" After about 48 hours of spinning over the period of several months (external video storage) this drive failed to the point that it is no longer recognized by the computer = expensive data recovery.

Other Thoughts: Seagate wants you to pay $1800 for their data recovery services, I think they must be trying to produce garbage drives to feed their recovery service business. Seagate support was understanding and told me that the product will still be replaced under warranty if sent with a letter from the data recovery service which has "data recovery" obvious in the letterhead.
This drive is only useful in RAID situations or where you don't care if you loose all your data.
I don't believe seagate is honestly reporting reliability on this drive. "MTBF=700,000 hours" and "Annual Failure Rate=0.34 % f"

1 out of 5 eggsAVOID AT ALL COST!

Pros: It worked for 3 months.

Cons: It worked for only 3 months. This served as my backup drive until the head started making a grinding sound. Then the drive suddenly was not readable.

Contacted Seagate and they want $600 - $3,900 to recover the data that I wouldn't have needed to recover had their drive not failed.

I had always been a fan of Seagate - but not anymore.

1 out of 5 eggsBuy Something Else

Pros: well, you cant deny the hefty size which is great for the price. Ran real quiet for me, too.

Cons: It was great for all four of the hours I used it until it just broke down.

Other Thoughts: These drives are constantly breaking down. Just check the other reviews. Go buy something else, trust me.
