Seagate has long been both an innovator and a crowd-pleaser in terms of data storage technology. The new ST31500341AS is the latest in a long line of Barracuda drives, with a storage and speed seldom seen. Designed with noise- suppression engineering and state-of-the-art speed and power this 1.5 TB powerhouse offers a brilliant combination of technology and low cost of ownership. Idling at only eight watts, this drive delivers up to 43% power savings over earlier generations without sacrificing performance.
When supported by the latest firmware updates, downloadable from Seagate once you've purchased your drive, this spectacular unit offers the best of both worlds -- top performance and a very small eco-footprint, so you know you have an industry leader AND are doing something good for the environment.
Download instructions are available under the "Product Tour" tab!
Pros: Largest capacity drive out without a pricetag that reflects it.
Cons: If this drives comes with the stock SD15, SD17, or SD19 firmware, beware of write cache flush lockups/freezes. Seagate has released a new SD1A firmware that fixes this issue.
Other Thoughts: I'd give 5 stars if not for the firmware issue, even though it's fixed now. It will be a bit of a hassle for everyone, especially those without much technical knowledge.

Best value for the money ever
Reviewed By: on 11/18/2008
Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
Pros: I benchmarked this drive vs a ST3320620AS 320GB drive and it comes in at about double the read performance, 100MB/s vs 50MB/s and 1.5 times the write performance 80MB/s vs 40MB/s
Cons: The affected part numbers for the write caching delay issues are: 9JU138-300, 336 with firmware revisions SD15, SD17, or SD18.
The drives I got from newegg are: 9JU138-568 Firmware: SD35
So they are not affected.
Other Thoughts: After formatting it shows up in explorer as 1.36 TB

Tech Level: high - Ownership: less than 1 day
Pros: high capacity, 5 year warranty
Cons: might need firmware upgrade
Other Thoughts: If you researched the drive before you bought it, you probably read about the freezing problem. Seagate has released a new firmware to deal with this and it's on the "Product Tour" section of the newegg website. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148337

Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Great value for the money. Fast, efficient, and large hard drive.
Cons: I ordered two and both died about 6 months after purchase. Very disappointing for a Seagate drive, they are generally reliable.
Other Thoughts: As with most hard drives, some people have bad experiences. Some people will purchase this drive and it will work great for them, unfortunately for me it didn't work out that way.

Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: less than 1 day
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: A ton of space for what you pay for and 7200 RPM on top of that.
Cons: None, though a firmware update is recommended.
Other Thoughts: Doesn't come with a SATA cable. I had to run to Radio Shack to get one because I didn't feel like waiting another week to have one delivered.

Many bad drives
Reviewed By: on 7/29/2010
Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Cheap, fast, big.
Cons: Shoddy piece of garbage.
Other Thoughts: I bought four of these drives initially. Two failed within the two months. They were replaced by Seagate. Now, another is failing.
Talking to people who use a LOT of drives, these ones have a really bad rep. Lots of RMAs, lots of DOAs.
Please note that this is distinct from the firmware issue others have mentioned.
DON'T BUY THIS DRIVE!
