1 out of 5 eggsnot good

Pros: capacity

Cons: horrible write speed

Other Thoughts: I have 2 of these (a 320 and a 500) and both only write at a very lousy 2.6 MB per second on large write operations such as transferring entire folders with numerous files in a single operation. Doesn't matter if I plug them into my i7 or my older AMD box...same results. This is using the included cable or a third party cable. I even tried doing a full reformat (i.e. the 2 hour type) as NTFS with 4096 block size and still get the same thing. Enabling write caching in Windows will mask the problem on small writes but dumping in a hundred meg of data in one op brings them both to their knees every time...meanwhile my Buffalo flash drive writes at about 22 MB per second on the same boxes doing the same transfers...

Pros: I have purchased 2 of these drives and they are flawless! They are very small and portable and run whisper quiet. Amazing price and fast shipping as always from New Egg!

Cons: None.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Hits about 34.0 MB/s for both read and write; these are the best speeds you can expect from a USB 2.0 drive. The drive remained relatively cool over a 30 minute stress test (see other thoughts). The price, when on sale, makes it an excellent bargain, although extremely large drives might have a better GB/$ ratio (but also require a larger absolute investment). The style is nice and simple and is likely to go along with any color scheme.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Comes with a software installer on the drive, including hidden files. Back these up somewhere (if desired) and then format the drive. The drive formats to 298 GB, as expected. The drive internally reads at an average of 54.0 MB/s, across the drive, and contains an 8 MB cache: this makes it identical to the Toshiba internal laptop drive of the same size, albeit limited to USB 2.0 speeds. With room temperature ambient, the drive ranged from 30C idle to 38C under load (it should therefore operate optimally up to an 85F ambient, and without serious problems up to 102F ambient, but don't leave it in a car or outside on a hot/sunny day). The included cable is exactly 12" end-to-end and is of mini-B to A type.

5 out of 5 eggslooks cool

Pros: After reading the reviews, which were helpful telling me what to avoid, I installed it with XP32 op sys and removed my audio books from my work computer. Use NTFS. Works fine. It really looks good.

Cons: Would have been nice to include a case. These things should always come with a case.

4 out of 5 eggsIs what it is

Pros: No drivers needed. USB powered. Very quiet. No heat issues with me at least. No high vibrations. Just plug it in and go if you want.

Cons: Has some third party "backup software" preinstalled on the drive. When you first look in your drive you see "install.exe" and most people will click it thinking its needed for proper function of the drive. Not so. Its just backup software. And whats up with the hidden files on the drive? Format before using.

Other Thoughts: Remember, reformat before using. You may be using FAT32 or NTFS or somthing else. Formating after you have backed up is not wise.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: USB powered, small/lightweight = discrete, warranty

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Been using this for the Wii for past 6 months (approx 70 items and only 65% full). Works perfectly and powers down when the Wii powers down. If you don't need more storage space and don't want to spend alot, then don't bother looking any further.

5 out of 5 eggsEXCELLENT!

Pros: An EXCELLENT drive! This is my second 320gb toshiba external hard drive and I LOVE IT! I've never had ANY problems with it! With my first HD (which I bought in a store), I formatted to NTFS since I use it with windows and FAT32 slows down the drive terribly. My current, second HD that I bought from newegg I formatted to MAC OS Extended for my macbook. It works flawlessly and took just under one hour to put nearly 150 GB of music on there. An excellent drive which I recommend!

Cons: Nothing.

Other Thoughts: it got here 1 day earlier than it was supposed to :D

2 out of 5 eggsBad Software and Documentation

Pros: Works well as an external drive after I formatted it.

Cons: Lousy NTI software. No documentation provided in the box. Hung up my computer three times while trying to implement it an initiate a backup. Finally gave up and formatted the drive to use to copy files to it. Works OK that way.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Perfect

Pros: Decent Look. Small. Fast. Easy to use. Lightweight. Works. USB powered. Quiet.

Cons: None really; had to format into NTFS I suppose, but that's a very easy process.

Other Thoughts: I bought this in stores in a jiffy, it was the cheapest one they had. I was hesitent at first, but since I bought it in stores returning it wouldn't have been an issue. I'm glad I bought it! It works just like a flash drive, I've even yanked the cord without "ejecting" it from windows several times, hasn't caused any damage. I love how fast it is for being a USB-powered harddrive. I use it to transfer DV footage between computers, and I wanted something small/usb-powered since portability was an issue. This thing even fits in my pockets no problem! Overall, I'm impressed, this thing has worked flawlessly. I wouldn't recommend installing any software for it, I've used it with XP, Vista, and 7, none have required any software.
