2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Drives perform well and are from a fairly trusted brand.

Cons: Had 4 out of 25 fail or corrupt data within 1.5 years of usage in a small business. Systems were running either Win7 Pro x86 or x64 in standard laptop configurations. 1 of the 4 failed drives had unrecoverable data using normal recovery tools and had to be sent to a data recovery service (unfortunately the regular backup was not sufficient). We'll see how many others fail by the end of the 2nd year of use.

Other Thoughts: My experience with other Spinpoint models has been great so far, but I would definitely avoid this model if you can help it.

4 out of 5 eggsI have the M6 HM500LI, actually.

Pros: Durable (I dropped it). Virtually silent. Strong performance.

Cons: Not happy with low voltage/current USB power. Oh, and I bought the thing when it cost over 100 dollars.

Other Thoughts: I had this in 2 different external drive sleds, and it wouldn't spin up from just USB on one computer, even with a Y-cable. I got rid of the computer with the weak power supply, and I ended up putting this drive in my media PC as the main storage. Less power draw and more space, couldn't be happier with it.

1 out of 5 eggsHigh load/cycle counts

Pros: Relatively quick
Super quiet
Runs cool
Cheap

Cons: Aggressive default power management yielding high load/cycle counts

Other Thoughts: It pains me to write this review, as I am a staunch Samsung supporter when it comes to their hard drives. I've bought several over the years and they've always been reliable, much more so than WD. I purchased this drive as an upgrade to my HM320JI (320GB) and installed Windows 7 Pro (64bit) on it. To my surprise, when firing up DiskCheckup or HD TunePro, I found that the load/unload cycle count accelerating up at 300,000 after a mere two weeks of usage. With this drive spec'd to 600,000 load/unload cycles, I am worried about its longevity; my HM320JI (spec'd to 600,000 load/unload cycles), after a year of usage, only had 90,000. The weird thing about it is that it does not make any clunking noises like the HM320JI did when its heads were parking, which stopped after I changed its advanced power management (APM) value. In contrast, HM500JI does not respond to any user changes to its APM value, so I left it on default. My recent RMA'd drive exhibits same behavior.

2 out of 5 eggs2 out of 4 went bad

Pros: - Quiet
- Low platter count, high areal density
- Good performance
- SMART feature supported

Cons: I bought 4 of these for my QNAP SS-439 Pro NAS.

1 drive had a problem being detected, I had to unplug and then plug it back in for it to be recognized. This caused the RAID5 container to have to be rebuilt every time. Drive 2 started to get bad blocks/sectors after 56 days. I have not replaced it via RMA yet, I just had an extra spare so I am using that for now. We'll see how the RMA goes with Samsung...

Other Thoughts: This drive has good specs and it's quiet, but reliability seems to be much poorer than WD Scorpio line. I can't imagine using this in a non-RAID setup, you could lose all your data at once without warning.

2 out of 5 eggsMoving On...

Pros: fast & quiet (when working)

Cons: 2nd drive attempt after DOA; Second drive stopped working after 2 weeks ownership - lost some data in process.

Other Thoughts: First drive received in Dec. 09 was DOA; NewEgg replaced and worked great for 2 weeks before giving out. I didn't want to try replacing again, so NewEgg graciously allowed for refund with paid return shipping and no restocking fee as this was the second defective drive sent. Thanks NewEgg! Going to try Hitachi once refund is complete.

4 out of 5 eggsGood drive.

Pros: Quiet & Fast Drive that works well with Macbook. First drive received was DOA, but NewEgg replaced relatively fast and paid for return shipping.

Cons: Not as fast as 7200rpm.

1 out of 5 eggsDead Dogs!

Pros: None!

Cons: Ordered 2 drives. One was DOA. The other lasted a day (yep, a day!). Purchased Toshiba drives and these worked like a charm (stated just to prove that the Samsung drives were indeed the real problem). What are the odds ... 2 ordered, 2 dead.

Other Thoughts: NewEgg rocks! RMA process was great. Had to chat with RMA support when the 2nd drive cratered (and the first DOA drive had not yet been carted off to UPS). NewEgg support corrected my original RMA and sent me a new shipping label.

3 out of 5 eggsNot too bad....

Pros: Lots of storage. Fairly quick (this drive can't compete with a 7200RPM drive).

Cons: One of the two drives I purchased for my DV7t died after 9 months. It gave no warning sign, just stopped working. Samsung support was very helpful though. I promptly received a new drive; however, I did lose some data.

Other Thoughts: The drive that contained my OS('s) crashed. I did a lot more modification of the partition table on this drive than most people will ever do. I had 4 operating systems, and 3 different file systems on this drive at one time. I don't really know if that has any effect on the drive's life, but it may. Then again I may have just gotten a bad drive.
