By incorporating a USB controller within the conventional hard drive, the S2 has a smaller case footprint vs. competing external hard drives The USB on-board technology also reduces the weight and the power consumption of the drives. In addition, a power savings intelligence program monitors the drive's use and places the drive into a low power "sleep mode" whenever the drive has not been used for 5 minutes.

Cons: First one purchased from newegg.com failed about 2 weeks after arrival, just began clicking and randomly disconnecting, until fully dieing, causing me to loose everything that was on it, fortunately I still had it all on my main drive. Newegg replaced it with a new one no questions asked. Replacement unit lasted about 3 months and failed in the same manner as the previous. So now its on the way to Samsung service center to be replaced with a new one. Other Thoughts: If you want reliability stay away. I found out the hard way :( Did you find this review helpful? Cons: Unfortunately, this is not a bootable external device. I'm not sure if it's a restriction of using a USB-powered device, or if it's the architecture of the internal USB interface instead of SATA, but it is not possible to boot from this device. I tried the corsair version and got the clicking of death then tried the WD and it crashed after a few weeks. I have had the samsung for 4 months now and it still works. the best part of this, the backup software actually WORKS.
