Awesome Drive
- Pros: Drive was recognized by Vista immediately. Took about 2 minutes to convert out-of-the box to NTFS. Very quiet and cool to the touch. Very responsive USB drive.
- Cons: None
- Other Thoughts: I have 7 external drives hooked to this computer for over 3TB of space. This drive is by far the best drive. I will be converting over to additional Fantom drives as finances allow.
Have not purchased this but...
- Pros: N/A
- Cons: N/A
- Other Thoughts: Just an FYI:
"Many hard drive manufacturers use a decimal number system to define amounts of storage space. As a result, 1MB is defined as one million bytes, 1GB is defined as one billion bytes, and so on. Since your computer uses a binary system, you may notice a discrepancy between your hard drive's published capacity and the capacity acknowledged by your computer. For example, a hard drive that is said to contain 10GB of storage space using a decimal system is actually capable of storing 10,000,000,000 bytes. However, in a binary system, 10GB is 10,737,418,240 bytes. As a result, instead of acknowledging 10GB, your computer will acknowledge 9.31GB. This is not a malfunction but a matter of different definitions."

Computers are base2, not base10.
Don't return this product because you think you "lose" 70GB that are never there to begin with.

Do not buy this drive
- Pros: It is large, cheap, and supposedly works with FW 800, as well as FW 400 and USB 2.0.
- Cons: Very unstable drive. It worked for a month or two and then started to have trouble mounting on a MacPro using the FW800. I changed the FW to the USB and it would work, but I had to reindex the volume. After another month it would no longer mount under USB regularly. Now it will not mount at all, Leopard is asking me to initialize the disk, which is exactly what I do not want to do.
- Other Thoughts: I originally thought my Mac had port problems, but intensive testing proved this false. It is not a good buy, even if you read the reviews of people who have owned it for a short time and love it. It is poorly made and the company should be ashamed of itself.
HDD
- Pros: Runs cool even in extreme climate like Iraq. I have 700+ gigs of movies on it and have no delays or pauses from any format (ie. divx, avi, mpg, flv, ect)
- Cons: none
- Other Thoughts: Great price and will purchase more of these
Good for a while
- Pros: Worked as well as any others for more than a year - other one I own is still working fine. 1 TB for a reasonable price. Recognized right away by Vista x64. I liked the plain metal box.
- Cons: Of the two drives I bought, one came with a loose connection to the power cable and it would fall out of the enclosure at a loud thought. I was very needy of the space, so I wedged the cable in with another object and was able to use it from May, 2007 until August of this year. At that point the connection became intermittent even when I held the cable in and the drive started clicking. Then Windows proclaimed it unformatted and 800Gb of data became inaccessible.
The thing is ... folks know, or should, that hard drives are only temporary storage. Even the most expensive ones with the longest warranties can fail - so if you don't back stuff up, or can't because there's SO MUCH DATA, you're walking on a tightrope. Live with it.
- Other Thoughts: The electrical engineer in the household proclaimed that the connection from the "bridge" was faulty, not from the power supply. Fantom was happy to sell me another power adapter, but would only fix the circuitry if I sent it to them. Since it wasn't under warranty, I didn't.
However - THERE IS HOPE ALL YE WHO'VE LOST DATA WITH THIS OR SIMILAR DEVICES. I discovered if I left the drives connected to the RAID circuitry and continued to use the USB input, BUT used the power supply from my computer (connecting the back of each individual drives to the computer's power cables), the computer was able to see the RAID as one drive and recover ALL my data. Now my Fantom is two 500 Gb Hitachi drives which are living in my computer and the nice box and broken circuitry are off to be recycled.
