works well
- Pros: Allows repurposing of some old IDE drives in my old HTPC for new motherboards that can only have 2 PATA devices. Ubuntu 9.04 had no issues seeing the drives when connected using this adapter. Can recognize with bios on ECS G43T-M which I'm using for a new HTPC build.
- Cons: I found that the combination of this card with a 300GB PATA WDC bumped up the boot time by about 10 seconds. A 250GP PATA Maxtor drive did not have this issue nor did an IDE DVDRW.
- Other Thoughts: There seems to be a few instances in the reviews where people have said this doesn't work with certain drives. It did work for me but it increased the boot time significantly. I ended up switching my devices around and have both IDE hard drives on the actual PATA controller instead of using this adapter. I'm currently using an 8GB compact flash card and a CF->IDE adapter as a cheap alternative to a flash hard drive. Currently, it boots from power button push to loaded XBMC in 35 seconds.
System config: Intel Pentium E5200 Dual Core ECS G43T-M microATX motherboard 2x2Gb OCZ DDR2
- Pros: worked great for my kids harddrive but not for the dvd player
- Cons: see above
Did not work with WD 320GB IDE
- Pros: Great idea to keep older IDE drives when upgrading systems/mobos.
- Cons: I could not get this to work with a Western Digital 320GB with three partitions. I read all the reviews and tried the drive without jumpers and as master. pressed the reset button after powerup & before bios scanned for IDE drives.
- Other Thoughts: I didn't want to operate the IDE HD with the PATA DVD-rw drive, but had to to get the drive recognized. So far, I haven't noticed much if any downgrading in access/transfer speed.
