Bang for your buck
- Pros: Incredible sound quality, totally immersive gaming, flexible boom mic, vibration effect works really well and really adds to the overall experience.
- Cons: Hurts my ears after an hour or so, doesn't support EAX, no mute button for mic.
- Other Thoughts: The heaviest of all the surround sound headsets, but thats not to say that it's heavy. You probably won't even notice the weight. I'm overall very pleased with this headset, albeit its minor issues, and has all the features I was looking for. It should be noted, however, that this headset, like all "surround sound" headsets, is no substitute for a real 5.1 (or 7.1) speaker setup. The surround effect, is just that, an effect. Even though it has multiple speakers in each earpiece, they're still all grouped together, and one has to use his/her imagination to really get the feeling of front or rear channels. I would call this headset, like all 5.1 headsets, "stereo plus" instead of surround sound. However, when you consider the fact that a good sound card and 5.1 speaker setup could set you back more than $xxx, a surround sound headset (especially for laptops) is a great option, and this headset, specifically, has the BEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK. Recommended.
Good, until extreme crackling
- Pros: For about 6 or 7 months, this headset delivered great sound quality (especially in movies), and a decent mic.
- Cons: The surround sound isn't as noticable in games - in fact, sometimes I find using the "headset" option vs. a 5.1 option produces a better result. My real grip is that a few weeks ago (owned these for about 8 months), the headset started furiously hissing, crackling, and popping when I move my head. It's still very playable, since once I start playing a game I never really shake my head very much. After it calms down it takes a large movement to start it up again.
- Other Thoughts: I'm pretty sure the problem arises from the cable going from the headset to the audio box, seeing as I've switched the USB cable going from the audio box to my comp multiple times (also tried different USB ports). The problem is this is the cord with the volume controls, and is built into the headset, so I doubt I could just order a replacement cord.
Could not ask for better
- Pros: Volume and Mute controls on the base unit as well as seperate volume controls on the cord itself (Front, Rear, Subwoofer and Vibrate). USB driven means highly portable from system to system. 5.1 sound experienced on all movies and games tested. Lound and good sound throughout most of the volume ranges. No noticable hum or other ghost effects from the USB port. Mic is awesome and very flexable. The ability of these to fold up into themselves makes them very portable to throw into my laptop backpack and go.
- Cons: USB driven, on older systems these could cause a slight increase in processor usage. On tested systems ranging from a 1.8G AMD to an AMD 64 X2 3800 and a few Celerons inbetween, Processor usage for the audio was never more than 1% and those readings were only spikes on the graph because it rounds up to the nearest percentage point, stayed under .5% most of the time.
- Other Thoughts: I now own several different 5.1 headsets and these are by far the best.
