Tricky for Toshiba notebooks
- Comments: These drives (and most other after-market drives) are difficult to install in a Toshiba notebook. The problem is not with the drive but with the notebook. The onboard firmware in most notebook optical drives (including the SD-R2612) is configured for Cable Select (CSEL), whereas a Toshiba notebook treats an optical drive as Master. If you install the SD-R2612 in a Toshiba, it will not be recognized by Windows and an "IDE1 Error" will be reported during the boot process, because your BIOS can’t find a Master drive. You must change the drive’s configuration before you can use it in a Toshiba notebook. Download a program called "CSEL-Changer for the SD-R2612" (available from sddtechnical@toshiba-teg.com) to your other computer. (I hope you have one or can get a loaner.) If your other computer is a non-Toshiba notebook, replace its optical drive with the SD-R2612, boot the notebook, and run the program. It will reconfigure the drive’s firmware to a Master setting. Then move the drive to your Toshiba notebook, and away you go. If your other computer is a desktop, you must first acquire an adapter to convert the ATAPI connection on the drive to accept the IDE cable used in your desktop. Install the adapter on the drive, open your desktop’s case, unplug the IDE cable from the desktop’s optical drive, and connect it to the adapted SD-R2612. (You must also connect a small power plug to the small power port on the adapter.) Boot the machine and run the CSEL-Changer. Then remove the SD-R2612, remove the adapter, install the SD-R2612 in your Toshiba notebook, and it should work. Newegg doesn't seem to offer the required adapter. Try Googling “slim cd adapter” to find a store that does. I am not impressed with Toshiba’s customer service. Their geek suggested I use Google to find something called “an authorized repair station” where an expert would take charge of my problem, for a modest fee, I assume. The Toshiba-Teg group (in Germany) is an exception. They were very helpful. I own six Toshiba notebooks. I will not buy another.
HP OmniBook
- Comments: Used as a replacement drive for a 6000 series HP OmniBook. uninstall the plastic tray and backplane from the old drive and install it on the new one... 100% functional, but aestheticly less then ideal.
Great Drive
- Comments: www.mitxpc.com This drive was used for a mini-itx application, and performs very well. Toshiba is a great manufacturer of electronics, and I trust thier quality of products.
