If you want to be a participant instead of a spectator in the DVD format war, Sony has your weapon, the BWU-100A. The drive supports recording both 50 GB and 25 GB BD-R (write once) and BD-RE (rewritable) discs. This advanced Blu-ray burner will also handle all normal recordable optical media formats including dual layer discs.

With up to 50GB capacity on dual layer Blu-Ray discs you can store all of the video from your HD video camera in native format. This equals 4 hours of 1080 HD format video. This capacity makes it an ideal drive and format for archiving both home systems and business servers.

The PATA / IDE format ensures compatibility with most computers. This will let everyone join the High Definition video revolution.

  • newegg Blu-ray DVD Burner The SONY BWU-100A Blu-ray DVD Burner is capable of writing up to 50GB of data on a write-once BD-R disc or a rewritable BD-RE disc or writing up to four hours of high-definition HDV 1080i video on a BD-RE disc. The BWU-100A also records single-layer DVD±R/±RW/RAM discs and dual-layer DVD±R discs as well as CD-R/RW. The next-generation Blu-ray drive provides a perfect solution for high volume data backup and HD video recording.
  • newegg CyberLink BD Solution Software The included CyberLink BD Solution software provides a complete solution for capturing, composing, editing and recording high-definition HDV 1080i format video onto new generation BD discs or converting your personal HD video content down to standard-definition resolution for burning onto regular DVDs.

1 out of 5 eggsBD-RE won't play on blu-ray players

Pros: Burner works well for blu-ray media that it supports.

Cons: This is sony's blu-ray burner but it will only burn BD-RE disks. The Sony player will not play BD-RE disks. How bogus is this?

4 out of 5 eggsBundled software is bad

Pros: Worked well right out of the box, burned a couple of movies with zero problems. It's a great drive at the price.

Cons: Bundled software isn't great. The Cyberlink player is a crippled OEM version that does not offer multi channel audio.

Other Thoughts: Make sure to update your Cyberlink software right away (hint: the key is case sensitive!). This is a great little burner but the burn speed is pretty slow. ~45 minutes for a full disk.

5 out of 5 eggsAm now a happy camper

Pros: Works perfectly reading/burning/playing all previous cd/dvd formats
Just got my Power DVD patch to play BD-Rom movies and watched House of Flying Daggers and Fifth Element - colors were great

Cons: None so for except had to wait month and a half for BD-Rom software

Other Thoughts: Recording time is long but 25GB is a lot more data than 650MB CD

5 out of 5 eggsSweet

Pros: Blu-ray, the discs can hold 25 - 50 gigs, though, storing that amount of space will take quite a long time, HDCP video cards are coming out, nVidia's 7950GT works wonders

Cons: takes a long, long time to burn a lot of data, blu-ray movies arent all that much better quality than standard dvd's at this point, give it another year or so and this will get much better

Other Thoughts: good buy if you have an extra 300 bux to put down on a HDCP video card... they do exist, just not a lot of them out at this point...

5 out of 5 eggsAll the optical drive you'll ever need

Pros: burns and plays all optical disk...even plays back blu-ray movies

Cons: slow writes on all media, semi loud when spinning, doesn't have lightscribe burning

Other Thoughts: i wrote another review but newegg did not post it. this drive does play movies, even comes with playback software. you do need a hdcp-compliant video card. my setup includes intel dg965wh motherboard, silicon image sii1390ctu hdmi add2 card and the sonic bd playback software.

3 out of 5 eggsMight have been too soon

Pros: I bought this from a different website but I'll review it here anyways...

It burns blu-ray discs. Nobody in my computer club has one but me, which is awesome.

Cons: I havn't really used it except just to show my computer club it works, but I have one and thats the point.

Other Thoughts: I'm glad I got it. Everyone in my computer club are so jealous I can tell. It feels so good.

2 out of 5 eggsCan't play movies

Pros: High storage capacity

Cons: This unit, while able to store lots of data for backup, does it extremely slowly.
The neat thing about this is that you can't watch blu-ray movies with it because there aren't any video cards capable of HDCP out there. What a waste.

5 out of 5 eggsNot SATA...

Pros: I don't know much about this drive but I would have expected to be a SATA drive at least.

Motherboard companies keep taking away IDE slots and putting more SATA slots... but just how many 320GB HDD do you need? (One?)

Cons: Not sure.

Other Thoughts: I could see getting this as a "future proof" but the lack of SATA is a no-no.

It's fun to be on the cutting edge, but you will bleed (spend).
