1 out of 5 eggsUnreliable and overpriced.

Pros: When it worked, it was fast, smooth, and quiet. Plextor's customer service is quick to respond with an RMA #. They have alot of experience handing out RMA #'s.

Cons: Reliability issues. First drive died in 9 months. It would burn CD's with digital distortion and bad tracking data. DVD's would pixelate and freeze. The second RMA drive worked for a week. Now, it just spins and grinds when you insert media.

Other Thoughts: I bought this drive based on the percieved quality of the brand. Everyone would always recommend Plextor as the best drive money could buy. Since Plextor charges a premium of 2 or 3 times their competition, I thought that naturally the drives features and performance would match the price. I was wrong. Plextor is the 'Bose' of DVD burners. They charge alot of money, but the performance and reliability doesn't match the price. Research the forums for other Plextor owners problems with this drive before buying.

Cons: Dies after a while.

Other Thoughts: Do NOT try the 1.09 firmware upgrade. Its a deathtrap.

1 out of 5 eggsGone through 4 and none of them work

Pros: It's a DVD writer

Cons: First one died after 11 months, SO I was able to RMA it. Second one was DOA, third one was DOA, fourth one wouldn't read any DVD's (commercial or burned).

Other Thoughts: After talking to tech support I finally got it to read and write. Won't write good though, all video is distorted and choppy and the audio sounds like nails on a chalk board. I have Plextor Premium CDR and it works flawlessly. My first 716a didn't give good burns either. All around piece of junnk if you ask me

4 out of 5 eggs2nd unit as good as the first.

Pros: 2nd unit works well so far.
Quiet when burning.
Works flawlessly with Easy Media Creator 8.
Plextools Professional gives you a lot of options for tweaking.

Cons: Does not burn at full 16X on 16X media. I may need to tweak the drives using Plextools Professional.
Cannot burn at 6X on dual-layer media not expressly rated as such. I ruined a Memorex 2.4X disc finding this out :-(
Must be very, very careful when replacing the beige faceplate with the black one. Do not use any force whatsoever!!

Other Thoughts: I've noticed the negative reviews of this unit from several users but I have not experienced any problems with either drive yet. As my title says the second unit is as good as the first. I now have two dual-layer burners in my box and it's cuts record time in half: I can burn two DVDs simultaneously (one primary disc and one backup disc). Maybe the other reviewers received bad units?

I wouldn't buy this drive now as the PX-760A has been released and is cheaper. But for my money the PX-716A cotinues to serve me well.

5 out of 5 eggsLong term use

Pros: I've used this drive in my main pc for over a year now, and its working flawlessly. I probably use it less than most, but its never burned a coaster, mis-read a disk, or had any problems at all.

Cons: Only con I can think of is the eject button is flush, and hard to eject only by feel.

Other Thoughts: Recommended purchase, good drive.

2 out of 5 eggsnot a good buy

Pros: none.

Cons: owned three 716a in the past year and all went bad after a couble of months, they produce a grinding sound or not able to reconize a disc that inserted, also unable to read date correctly.

1 out of 5 eggsPlextor PX-716A

Pros: This drive has a high buffer memory which is the main reason I purchased it. I have an older Plextor CD-RW drive which works flawlessly

Cons: This drive does not always read CD R's, although it writes fine. Sometimes I have to re-insert the CD's multiple times to get it to read them. This drive is un reliabble. I purchased an NEC drive for about onr third of the price of the Plextor and it outperforms the Plextor

Other Thoughts: You can buy another drive for about one third of the cost of the PX-716A and it will most likely perform better.

3 out of 5 eggsGood Performance, Short Lived

Pros: Great for burning. Great quality.

Cons: Short life span.

Other Thoughts: It may be a short life on the product but I am a high end user and I am always burning everyday. I had a Sony before this and it didn’t last as long either. But I know other people with the same products and it still works as the same day they got it (but they don’t burn that much). So basically if you are a high end user, you will just burn it up.

1 out of 5 eggsdont buy it

Pros: worked great when it worked.

Cons: It's life is too short.

Other Thoughts: I have this drive for about 15 months. I used it to burn about 30 DVDs. One day I turned my computer on and it's not reading any CD and DVD at all, just keep blinking amber lights

3 out of 5 eggsProblem with RWs

Pros: Works very well with DVD+/-R disc. Also CD-R. No problem whatsoever with them.

Cons: Tons of problem with rewritable discs. CD-RW or DVD+RW. It is not able to read the RW (especially DVD+RW) discs. It simply can't read them (rarely able to since I bought it.) I erased the discs using a Sony drive then put into Plextor for burning. It completed but the disc is not readable. Plextor replaced the drive with no luck. Huge problem!

Other Thoughts: Plextor used to be the best and one of the most expensive, and now, I'm even consider getting another brand like NEC.
