Best Single Layer DVD Writer?
- Pros: Both Nero Disc Quality and KProbe report high quality burns on each of the 4 different DVD single layer (SL) media I have on hand: Verbatim 16X DVD+R (MID:MCC004) recorded at 18X!; RiTEK 8X DVD+R (MID RO3) recorded at 8X; RICOHJPN 8X DVD+R (MID R02 003) recorded at 8X; and Memorex 8X DVD-R (MID CMC MAG AE1) recorded at 4X. Appears to be a great single layer DVD burner. Test results are at SwopMedia . I have not tried double layer (DL) media.
It’s not a fast reader for DL pressed DVD-ROMs (store bought DVDs) but reads scratched/lightly damaged discs quite well – better than any other drive I’ve tried. Reads SL pressed discs at 16X. It also reads 90 and 99 min audio CDs, plus it reads and writes DVD-RAM at 12X and has the LightScribe labeling/imaging feature.
Short length means it will fit in many smaller cases.
KProbe compatibility due to the Mediatek chipset.
NewEgg had the best price and delivery was fast (as usual)! Thanks!
- Cons: Slow DL read speeds.
Nero Disc Quality scanner would not initially work .
Bit setting for DVD+Rs has to be done each time a disc is recorded – the DVD-ROM setting won’t stick.
- Other Thoughts: This is definitely a step up (from a DVD writing standpoint) from my other 3 highly rated DVD burners. It writes faster and at equal or better quality than the others. Currently there is only one other 18 writer available in the US and it’s twice this burner’s price. That fact alone should greatly help you with your purchasing decision.
Also, bear in mind that this is a new model and any bugs you may read or hear about this unit will more than likely be corrected by future firmware releases. The new Samsung/Toshiba optical disc drive alliance is going to be around for a while and individually both companies have a good history of product performance, service and reliability.
As far as SL writing performance goes, this is probably as good as it currently gets.
Super Fantastic
- Pros: Fast, quiet, pretty, LightScribe, big round eject button, fast LightScribe burns... oh yeah, the software suite rocks my socks off. I'm pretty sure the value of the Nero suite is higher than I paid for the DVD drive with the software included. Newegg is so cool.
- Cons: Absolutely nothing. Best purchase I've made in a long time.
- Other Thoughts: Other reviewers who said it takes 40 minutes to burn a LightScribe image must have done something wrong. It takes me about 12 minutes on Draft and no more than 18 minutes on the highest setting.
And I'm serious about the software. It is THE BEST burning suite I've ever owned, and it came absolutely free with the drive. Data, audio, CD, DVD (including Dual Layer), even a great hard drive backup feature. Great, great program.

Good While It Lasted
- Pros: Quiet, fast, Lightscribe, not very expensive.
- Cons: Failed within 2 years of manufacture date (Dec 2006), after moderate use. I probably had burned less than 150 disks with it. To be fair, when it failed I had burned about 20-25 DVDs over the course of two days. It no longer recognizes media, neither blank nor pre-recorded. Laser failure?
- Other Thoughts: I replaced it with the LiteOn 22X, from Newegg, which seems like a great little burner for $25-30.
Good Drive
- Pros: This drive was purchased on 10/10/2006 from the egg and it still works like it did the day i installed it.Still plays and burn's CD/DVD'S verywell
- Cons: N/A
- Other Thoughts: NEWEGG ROX
Power-Hungry Burner!
- Pros: Quick, reads/writes the various types of -R/+R media I threw at it.
- Cons: Draws a ton of electricity. Have it as an upgrade to read DVD-ROM discs in HP ML110G3 Server.
- Other Thoughts: I had to give it its own power connection wire. The amp draw from the PSU is tremendous! If I added another optical drive or a HDD to the same power wire (coming from the PSU) I would have failed burns. Keep that tip in mind, it will save you a headache!
