3 out of 5 eggsGood While It Lasted

Pros: Quiet, fast, Lightscribe, not very expensive.

Cons: Failed within 2 years of manufacture date (Dec 2006), after moderate use. I probably had burned less than 150 disks with it. To be fair, when it failed I had burned about 20-25 DVDs over the course of two days. It no longer recognizes media, neither blank nor pre-recorded. Laser failure?

Other Thoughts: I replaced it with the LiteOn 22X, from Newegg, which seems like a great little burner for $25-30.

3 out of 5 eggsPower-Hungry Burner!

Pros: Quick, reads/writes the various types of -R/+R media I threw at it.

Cons: Draws a ton of electricity. Have it as an upgrade to read DVD-ROM discs in HP ML110G3 Server.

Other Thoughts: I had to give it its own power connection wire. The amp draw from the PSU is tremendous! If I added another optical drive or a HDD to the same power wire (coming from the PSU) I would have failed burns. Keep that tip in mind, it will save you a headache!

1 out of 5 eggsIf you want SLOW and LOUD?

Pros: It was a cheap thing to buy I guess?

Cons: It reads and writes at speeds about 90% slower than are advertised. It is also noisy. When reading or writing the drive sounds like a squeaking mouse wheel set into automatic mode, squeak squeak squeak

Other Thoughts: If this drive were 5 times better it would still be the worst possible purchase I've ever made in my entire adult lifetime.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Deal

Pros: I have had this thing for over 2 years and it still works great.

Cons: Could never get the Lightscribe to work, but never tried THAT hard.

Other Thoughts: Never any issues with Samsung, they put out excellent products

2 out of 5 eggsNever really worked as advertised.

Pros: Works great as CD reading drive, no more.

Cons: Little by little, the drive crippled itself. Had trouble out of the box, getting it to interact with a custom-built XP desktop. Reinstalled software, which allowed me to burn DVDs and CDs. Several months into use, Litescribe stopped working completely. I never got LiteScribe working. Now it can ONLY read CDs, nothing else.

Other Thoughts: I'm going to try an LG, which seem to have a better success rate. Shame though, I always liked other Samsung electronics.

1 out of 5 eggsNo good after 18 months

Pros: Worked well for a while.

Cons: I installed two of these DVD burners in a new machine. After about 18 months, one started burning coasters. It seems to read OK, but cannot burn successfully. The other one still works fine.

Other Thoughts: One out of two drives going kaput after 18 months earns 1 egg.

2 out of 5 eggsSo So burner

Pros: I have switched to using this as a reader. It has lots of coasters now.
Light scribe was neat at 1st. Don't use it now.

Cons: A little loud at initial spinup process.

Other Thoughts: Had over 2 years now and still works well. No errors or coasters!

5 out of 5 eggsTwo years later and still happy with my purchase...

Pros: Has lasted through consistent use. Was inexpensive for a drive that had Lightscribe even when I originally purchased it two years ago and the Lightscribe is nifty now that the Lightscribe DVDs are cheaper.

This thing has NEVER had a bad firmware update and I've done every single one as soon as they came out using the LiveUpdate utility.

It looks so slick that I bought a case to match IT rather than the other way around.

Cons: My computer is too slow to take advantage of how fast this awesome drive actually is!

Seriously though, there aren't any except maybe that it is 16x instead of 20x, if that matters to people. I burn at a slower speed so the info will burn deeper and therefore be less prone to flaws over time anyway.

Other Thoughts: I really love this drive. Before this burner, I was prone to getting all kinds of drives that would only last me a few months to a year and I used them just as much as I use this drive. They all broke and this one is still kicking! I seriously thought all manufacturers built them to stop working within 1 to 2 years. In fact, I didn't realize how bad a quality of burner I was suffering through until I found this one! Buy it. It's great!

I will replace it with another of the same if I have to, or even get one for another build I'm thinking of doing once I have more money. If I had the money, I'd get a few as gifts and one as a backup for mine. I'm really certain I won't need a replacement any time soon, but I really like this drive.
