Great netbook drive
- Pros: Works like it should. Only need to use 1 USB port since my netbook provides enough power.
- Cons: Gives off a bit of vibration just enough to possibly annoy people around you. Not as bad as a cell phone vibration, but loud enough to be audible.
- Other Thoughts: This drive DOES work with only USB power. It has a dual-USB cable just like other portable drives that allow you plug into another port in case your computer cannot provide the juice. I've tried this drive in 2 netbooks (Asus N10J and Asus EEE 904) along with a full-sized Toshiba laptop and a desktop, and I have yet to need both USB cables.
So far so good on Linux & XP
- Pros: I bought this primarily for my MSI Wind Netbook. I love the size, the asthetics, and that it doesn't need a seperate power supply. The grey color trim is subtle and not overstated. Very nice design. I was able to set the MSI Wind's BIOS to boot from USB CD/DVD and boot from it using a Knoppix CD with no problem. Debian Linux and Windows XP both recognized it. I haven't tried writting because that's not what I bought it for.
- Cons: No support for Windows 98. Not available in beige.
Since the unit doesn't require it's own power supply, a simple nylon carrying bag/sleeve would have been a nice bonus. This would primarily be for Netbook users who don't buy carrying bags large enough for peripherals which they'd only occasionally take with them. Just something a step up from carrying this thing around in a clear sandwich bag.
- Other Thoughts: It didn't work the first couple times (just flickered a little) because I didn't have the small Type-B end of the USB cable pushed in all the way. Half way you feel some resistance. But this helps the plug stay in firm.
The optional download of Samsung Max Speed (for chosing High Speed vs Quiet Mode) is only available as a download for Windows operating systems.
Suggestion to all DVD manufacturers: How about a bluetooth or wireless DVD drive for Netbooks? Something I can leave on a shelf across the room? I don't need speed but just something to satisfy my game's requirement of having the game CD in the drive.

It is like the drive in my laptop
- Pros: Good price, does what it is supposed to do. USB powered so no adapter, great for those running out of space on their multiple-outlet. The included burning software is a plus.
- Cons: not free
- Other Thoughts: This unit is just like the optical drive in my laptop, but encased in a small plastic enclosure. I have to hold it down to keep it from moving when opening and closing the drive. I don't count this a 'con' because I knew this going in. So if you are looking for something a bit heavier, like the older Sony DRX-820U, then this Samsung drive is not for you.
BTW, I wish the included USB cable was longer.
Perfect
- Pros: I used this drive for 3 operating hours every day for 2 weeks after it arrived. The device performed flawlessly every time, including burning several DVD-R discs. It continues to function properly to this date, but is no longer used as frequently.
- Cons: None
- Other Thoughts: This device requires 2 USB ports in proximity to each other, as a single USB connection does not provide appropriate power to operate the drive correctly. Be aware that USB extension cables, unpowered or poorly-powered USB hubs, and some USB headers are to be avoided when using this drive.
Fits in the bag better that the mediabase of a Dell D430
- Pros: Small size, decent performance, price (I got it on sale for $45, not $65). USB powered only, no need for a power cord. Standard USB mini-B connection - works with all my other "2-plug" USB cords and devices.
- Cons: the cord could be a little longer (I'd recommend getting a USB cord from one of the 2.5" portable hard drives where the cord splits in the middle, letting you plug into either side of the laptop with both plugs, but that's jsut me. I have a couple of these cords from failed [or destroyed] portable hard drives anyway, which I use)
- Other Thoughts: I have a Dell D430 laptop, which (by design, and I like it that way) has no internal optical drive. That's fine except Dell made a "media base" which makes your system about 1/2 inch thicker to add an optical drive. The other option is a specialty USB cord (Lookup dell d-bay) external drive which would still be $60-$80 depending on what type of optical drive you get for it, and would ONLY work with your dell laptop. I love dell, but if I scrap this laptop and get another, or if I'm at a friend's house and they dont have a burner (yeah right like that would happen), I should be able to use mine, so I got this, and it works great.
