4 out of 5 eggsBang for a buck

Pros: Very nice price. Good, smooth DVD read and CD-R/RW capabilities. ISO burning works extremely well. Customers seem to like it.

Cons: Somewhat slow burning. A tad louder than I would have expected. Wish it came with cables.

Other Thoughts: Nice for replacing old drives or adding simple DVD functionality on your computer. It's lasted me almost a year w/o needing a firmware update (on my work computer), so it seems stable enough. Haven't heard complaints about DVD burning... yet.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Sure, it'll work... at first.

Cons: It's MadDog. Although I've never had this product in particular, after a failing PSU that took a hard drive with it, and a external enclosure for another drive, I can safely say this is quite possibly one of the cheapest(in quality) computer hard ware manufacturers out there. Not worth your time, or your money, as most everything they have only works for a certain amount of time before breaking, and won't hesitate to take other parts with it.

2 out of 5 eggsI bought 6 of these, so I know.

Pros: It was cheap.

Cons: It was too cheap. I bought 6 for my home. And bought them because they were never in stock just in case. Well I have gone thru all but 3, and those 3 I am not burning DVDs on. This drive is not going to last you 3 months if you are burning a lot of DVDs. In fact, I think I have found the magic number to be around 200-300 DVD burns per drive. And I challenge anyone, especially the MadDog folks, to say they have gotten it to burn more than that.

Other Thoughts: I am trying another brand for 5 bucks more. Hopefully NEC can do better. But if not I will be back to let you guys know.

5 out of 5 eggsSuperb burner for the buck

Pros: You can't find a better burner for this price. I upgraded the firmware and have had ZERO problems with it. It is super quiet and is highly compatible with many types of media whether it is brand name or not.

Cons: No complaints.

Other Thoughts: For burning Dual Layers, I highly recommend the Playo DVD+R DL because it is so cheap and reaches 8x. Also works great with Matrix DVD+R DL.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great under x86 Linux!

Pros: Can't beat the price. Very quiet while burning, even at the faster speeds. Works great with my Fedora Core 6 box.

Cons: Does not come with software, but doesn't matter when you are a linux user.
