One good DVD reader/burner
- Pros: This drive comes with all the highest specs available and response time is good enough for my need.
- Cons: none so far.
- Other Thoughts: For me its noize is tolerable. I have no problem watching dvds and listening to music. I bought it in part because of its silver bezel. Its color exactly match with the silver front of Antec NSK2400 HTPC case. I couldn't be happier. My HTPC looks very nice with this one!
reliable and affordable
- Pros: I've bought NEC DVD Burners since I could remember. I've only had one go bad. That was after a yr. of heavy use. I go thru a 100 dvd/cd every 2 wks. Asides that drive no problems. Some people report slower speeds with different media brands. Remember all drives do that. There are firmware cracks that could help with that issue. Either way, this thing rips at high speeds and seems to come w/o a riplock, which is brilliant.
- Cons: None. Well there's no bitsetting
- Other Thoughts: Some people State that it doesn't come with anything. This is an OEM. Please make sure you learn what the terminology means before you buy. OEM parts are for builders. That's what makes the cost so low. Either way, why would you need a manual to a dvd drive...really!!! Just use the current cables you have on your pc. As far as software, usually the software that comes with the drives is the LE version which is handicapped and lacks features.
I actually have an NEC e949 phone and it's solid as a rock.

Noisiest thing in my PC
- Pros: Reads/writes at good speeds.
- Cons: Wow. I built a solid, quiet machine but thought that a fan was having problems until I realized it was the DVD player making all the noise. This is by far the loudest thing in my PC, and no, the other sounds do not mask it at all. It is a mid-range whirring sound that sounds like a fan that was shut off just kicked on and is getting up to speed. I'd look for a different DVD if I were you.
It's a silver DVD Burner!
- Pros: Burns quickly and accurately. Vista compatible. SILVER Bezel matches case perfectly!
- Cons: First one stoped burning/reading CDs (but not DVDs) after one week. Newegg replaced and the drive has worked since.
- Other Thoughts: The choices are slim if you're looking for a silver disk drive. Not only is this drive cheap, it's also got a ton of features! Newegg's always done me right and that's why I keep buying here.
Started failing after 5 months of light use
- Pros: Worked well for about 5 months.
- Cons: After 5 months, started failing to recognize it's own discs.
- Other Thoughts: I had to return the drive for a replacemnt, but the replacement unit had exactly the same problem from the beginning: after burning a DVD disc (on a brand name media), it could not read the disc back. The disc was readable in another DVD drive. This unit goes straight to trash, I'm done with Sony/Nec burners, looking for another model.
