The 7-color ink system will print rich, lasting copies of your photos at resolutions up to 9600 x 2400, in about 35 seconds. Whether you're printing on letter or legal sized plain paper, envelopes, or photo paper from credit card-sized to 8 x 10", you'll appreciate the sharp, crisp text, and brilliant, detailed photos that come from 4,608 precision nozzles carefully placing uniform, 1-picoliter ink droplets!

A great photo printer, but just so-so as an office printer.
- Pros: - 5 cartridge ink system (photo black, text black, cyan, magenta, yellow)
- Prints laser quality text on higher quality paper
- fax, scan, copy, print
- Duplex printing and scanning/copying
- Prints beautiful borderless photos and rather quickly (~better than 1 min per 4" x 6" photo in high quality mode)
- Nice dust covers for both paper-source locations (cassette and rear), but can only be closed when not in use.
- Networking was easy to setup, even when assigning a static IP, and has worked flawlessly on both XP Pro and Vista Home Premium
- Comes with rudimentary, but useful software for scanning and photo printing. For OCR, furnished with OmniPage SE v4.2.
- From the printer console, able to scan to a configured PC on the network where a user is logged in.
- Can scan to a variety of formats, including PDF.
- I like its appearance.
- Fax can be configured in multiple ways (e.g. dedicated line, shared with phone, recognize alternate ring, etc)
- Cons: - Automatic, duplex printing is only available for draft mode and is painfully slow. A manual mode is available.
- Automatic, duplex scanning is very slow, but a manual option is available. I only use it when I am not in hurry.
- No built-in wireless networking.
- Included software suite is not well-integrated. Software for scanning and managing scanned output is not intuitive and is fairly limited.
- Other Thoughts: I have been very happy with this printer overall, which was purchased for my home office. However, this printer is actually a very nice photo printer masquerading as an office machine.
I have probably scanned several hundred pages now in both single and duplex mode, and I have had only a few misfeeds, but those were on paper that had been extensively creased. I have not had any problems with paper in good condition.
I've printed upwards of 1,000 sheets, and other than one instance where two sheets were taken instead of one, I have had no problems with printing.
The borderless, color photos are stunning. Unfortunately, most of my printing is text plus documents that contain figures such as graphs and charts. Like another user, I do feel that this printer uses more color ink than it should.
This is the one!
- Pros: Finally a quality printer that has a black case. I have been looking for one for a long time. The printer is fast and prints high quality pics. This printer has everything you need for a small home office. I thought I might go color laser, but when this one hit the market, I decided to give it a try and have yet to be dissappointed.
- Cons: The only thing I have found is the time for initializing to the start of print. This may be a Vista driver issue, but the time it takes from hitting the print button to the start of printing seems a tad bit too long, like say about 10-12 secs. My older HP officejet d135 took about 1-2 secs.
- Other Thoughts: High quality printer in BLACK that you won't be dissapointed with. I don't have any details on the ink longevity, but the cartridges seem releatively cheap and you can replace just the ones that get used instead of the tri-ink cartridges.

great network multifunction
- Pros: Does everything I need and does it well. Performs print/scan/copy jobs as advertised. The network connection works great for a home where there are one or more wireless users. Do note that the printer must be hard-wired into the router. The additional software utility does a good job of telling you when ink is getting low without being obtrusive.
- Cons: I can only think of one: the ADF doesn't scan/copy legal size documents. However, its not often that I have to scan non-letter documents so it's a non-issue.
- Other Thoughts: Overall, it was a breeze to set-up and works as advertised. Printing mostly black/white documents on normal quality, I typically run thru the large BK cartridge in 3 months. I occasionally print high-quality photos and have found the quality to be very good. The original color cartridges have lasted 6 months. For me, this was a great buy.
Canon MX850 from a graphic designer's perspective
- Pros: Quality is excellent for graphic designers looking for a basic all-in-one printer scanning and light proofing. Yesterday, I printed 70 full color infosheets on 120lb Wasau white cardstock for a client. The infosheets came out rich and comparable to POD services like (lulu, blurb, etc.). This is a quality printer with a decent price for any designer who's on a budget and only wants one piece of hardware. The Canon MX850 is also one of the only printers that can handle duplex in this price range.
- Cons: Nothing really. On the infosheets, there was some minor banding with drop shadows. But that could have also been some issue printing a transparent Photoshop document that was linked from InDesign. Also note that this machine prints slightly heavy on the ink, so I recommend the "standard" setting to prolong the life of your ink cartridges.
- Other Thoughts: This is an upgrade from a defunkt HP952C Deskjet, which started leaking ink from its base. Except for the gradation issue, this printer rocks my world. I'm not using the fax, so no comments there. Did I mention that it prints duplex?
Best Printer In Its Price Range
- Pros: Print quality is superb for an inkjet printer. Ease of set up. It's bulkiness is an added plus for me as it tends to lend itself to trustworthiness.
- Cons: none
- Other Thoughts: Have owned Epson and mostly HP AIO in the past. After only using this machine for I day I was truly impressed by its speed and print quality. Goes without saying if you've ever tried HP inkjet printers you'll be amazed that printers can do what the Canon MX850 can accomplish. This is truly a REAL AIO and feels and acts like a printer costing 5 times as much. Canon has a real winner in the MX850 and I can honestly say for the first time I'm happy to see I got my money's worth. HP people don't know what they're missing. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this AIO for home or small office environment. I use it at home and it fulfills all of our printing needs. Truly a wonderful machine in its price range. And yes it does come with a complete set of ink cartridges.
