4 out of 5 eggsHappy Printer

Pros: Prints good looking color output that won't smear.
Prints fast from idle state.
Very easy to setup print drivers on additional PCs - my kids are printing directly from their PCs instead of taking over mine.

Cons: Huge footprint! I read that the printer was large, but still wasn't ready for the massive size. I had to move the filing cabinet a couple inches away from the wall to get it to fit on top.

Very loud calibration that seems to take place each time I print (only after the printing is done and it might be because I don't print very often, maybe once a day).

Other Thoughts: Initial setup was much longer process than I expected - start at least an hour or more before your first print job.

1 out of 5 eggsNO PCL/PS, Poor Performance

Pros: LOW Cost, larger cartridges than 2600 (more toner per), fine print quality on low-end documents.

Cons: Host-based printer. This should not bear the HP name -- does not support any protocols (PCL/PS) and even is not intended for workgroups or important documents (reference: adobe PDF)

Other Thoughts: Don't buy this printer. You will run into problems, I give you my word on that.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Printer for the price

Pros: Nice print Quality! Setup the Network printing in Seconds. The B/W Toner is rated for 6,000 pages and the Color Toner's are rated for 4,000 pages. That's Amazing!

Cons: This Puppy is a little Heavy!!! Little Noisy, when printing.

Other Thoughts: @ $300.00 it's a little steep in price, for a regular home desktop printer. But it's well worth it.

5 out of 5 eggsA Nice Printer with a secret

Pros: A nice printer, with great color, fast printing, and quick response. I was initially scared off by the per-page cost. The printer warns when the rated page count is getting close, and it actually stops printing when the cartridge page limit is reached and says, "purchase more cartridges." Using a postage scale, it was obvious the color cartridges were not empty at 4000 pages.

Here is the printer's secret: press menu, configure device, system setup, replace supplies, and you find "override at out" conveniently tucked. When you select this feature, it gives a hilariously long warning about the "risks" of continuing past rated page limit. You literally scroll down and read some 40 lines of text telling you what a bad idea it is, and then with a few more clicks you get to "yes, use override." Next, you enter a page limit for the override, and voila, it prints. Well, for my type of printing, the color cartridges last over 20,000 pages, not 4000; the black gives out at 10,000.

Cons: I think shutting down at the rated page limit is extremely lame. I ended up returning several nearly full cartridges to HP before I found out this hidden little f"override at out" feature, which takes 41 clicks to get to. Why do these printer makers not have some means of weighing the cartridges instead of the non-reliable, simpleton method of counting pages? If you think about it, the answer is obvious -- to sell more cartridges!

Other Thoughts: I tried several sets of remanufactured cartridges for the HP 3600 printer marketed by Xerox. "Hey, if it's Xerox," I thought, "maybe it is just as good." Not so. The Xerox cartridge is simply a re-filled HP cartridge with a Xerox sticker on it. I don't think they change the drum. I had so many quality problems using the Xerox cartridges that I won't buy them again. The new HP cartridges do keep their print quality through the 20,000 page override, whereas the Xerox cartridges start leaking toner before they were half empty.

One more tip: at a store that had both models on display, I compared the HP 3600 and the 2x more expensive HP 3800. They looked identical. Opening them up, their cartridges also look identical (except for the number). So, I swapped the cyan cartridges. The HP 3600 recognized the HP 3800 color cartridge and printed just fine, and the HP 3800 recognized the HP 3600 color cartridge and also printed just fine. They both use the same black cartridge.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for students

Pros: *Networking was very simple
*Up and printing in minutes
*Great quality
*Fast
*COLOR
*Cheap unit for high quality results

Cons: *Price of toner, buy 2 units and save money
*Somewhat noisy but not bad

Other Thoughts: I am both a high school student and own a small desktop publishing company. When i decided to order a color laser printer my first thought was to go and get HP, I WAS RIGHT. This unit is great a must for anyone. If able to afford 2 or more get them it will save on ink. At school we have a $4000 xerox and i printed a document off of the HP and off of the xerox the $300 HP out did the color vibrancy of the xerox.

4 out of 5 eggsGood and Bad

Pros: Price is unbeatable.
Network ready.
Installing hardware and software is like a breeze as always with HP.

Cons: When it is turning on, it is noisier than my truck. I am not kidding. It is absolutely much noisier than my truck being idle.
In ready mode, you can hear fan sound from the left side of the printer. Not very loud, but it could be annoying if you use it in your bedroom.
In sleep mode, it is very quiet. But, out of the blue, it starts calibrating by itself. And that sound is as big as its starting sound.
It takes almost one minute for the printer to be in ready mode after you turn on.
It is huge. About 50 pounds.

Other Thoughts: Print quality is not very great, but just good. It is noticeably worse than HP 1000 dollar printers at my work place, but a little better than my previous 100 dollar samsung ML2010. Actually I did not expect much from 3 hundred dollar color laser printer, so it is okay.
Finally, do I recommend this? Yes, if you want a color laser under 300. And No if you want a GOOD and QUIET color laser printer.

5 out of 5 eggsAbsolutely Awesome

Pros: Very fast printing, 4000 page color carts. included, very good print quality, great photos (for a color laser anyway), good paper handling, network ready, good looking, "override at out" feature...

Cons: A new set of toners is expensive...but aren't all color lasers? (at least they include the drum!), frequently "calibrates"

Other Thoughts: Go for it! Many other retail stores are selling it for 250 right now, but I got it off Newegg because I'd rather give them 250$ than most retail stores and there was no tax and free delivery.

5 out of 5 eggsThe Printer

Pros: My first Laser printer was a Star that lasted my 14 years and I paid about $700 for it. I got this one for 249 shipped. I can only hope it last half as long as my old B/w one did. (Still works by the way, just need new toner). So far this new printer works very nice. I use it for my kid’s home work and doing light work. It’s nice to have color also.
I just went to the HP site and Dl the software for it for Vista that was dated 1 Aug 2008. Installed like a champ, saw the ip address on my router boom bam done. Happy me.

Cons: It’s big, twice as big as my old star printer. Toner will eat you a hole in your pocket if you want to use it that way. (I don’t). If I have any picture to print or anything that I need really good color for I go to Kinkoo’s or waalmat for a better job and save on your toner that is going to cost you about 500$ to change out.

Other Thoughts: If you do it right you should only need to buy a black cartage for the life of the printer with luck. You might as well buy a second printer for 249$ if you plan on printing a lot.
I have had just bad luck with ink jets printers,, they work nice but if you don’t use them for a bit they seem to dry up and just turn to junk, I just flat out will not buy them again.

3 out of 5 eggs10.92.02 Error

Pros: HP makes good printers. I finally got it working. It being networked is very convenient.

Cons: Upon arrival it displayed the 10.92.02 error. A quick search of the net turned up that this is a common HP problem and is related to the toner latching mechanisms. Being that it is a brand new printer nothing should have been broken. Under the "Other thoughts" section is a quote from the HP forum that contained my solution.

Other Thoughts: Title: Subject: HP color LJ 3800dn Error 10.92.02
Quote:
"Thanks for the info. I was able to clear the error by removing all of the toner cartridges and then powering the printer on. I then powered it off and then inserted the magenta cartridge in, powered it on and then off. I inserted the cartridges one at a time and powered it up and down each time. It's a strange solution, but it's not the first one I've run across that didn't make much since to me. Thanks for your response. I read all of your responses concerning this error and found them to be rather informative."

5 out of 5 eggsLove this printer

Pros: Price, speed, ethernet connection and print quality

Cons: Cost of toner

Other Thoughts: The only problem I'm having with this printer is deciding if I should buy a second one! It's a great printer and the price is just ridiculous at $249! New toner is nearly double that so I'm thinking about getting a second one.

I connected it via the ethernet port and ended up changing it from DHCP to a static IP address. Until I did that, I was having some problems because it kept getting assigned a new address (not the printer's fault). I also deleted the HP port that was automatically created by the printer software and created a standard IP port. Once I made these changes, it prints the first page within seconds. If it needs to perform any kind of callibration, that happens after the print job completes so there's no waiting.
