Great for the price
- Pros: Like everyone else- I researched the heck out of this printer thinking "What? This can't be good for so cheap!" I had concerns- (what about curling? Sealing of envelopes? is it really loud?) Well- It's a fantastic bang for its buck. Print speed is fast, text is clear, the footprint of this printer is small (for a laser) and fits easily on my desk at home, and installation went off without a hitch. Also, the inherent benefits of laser over inkjet- no more cartridges (WOOHOO!), no more smears from half-dry paper, and no more gunky HP inkjet software to deal with.
- Cons: Graphics aren't anything you'd want to sell... but it's a monochrome printer, what do you expect. Buy a photo printer if you want good graphics. Paper curl is NOT THAT BAD- I'm cheap like you guys, using copier paper, and paper curl isn't an issue really. Only real complaint is that manual feed is a pain in the buttox- requiring you to feed in one piece of paper at a time. During this period, at least one will inevitably come out crooked. Envelopes, like any that are run through a laser printer get the adhesive stuck a little bit but are not actually sealed. It's not any louder than an inkjet either.
- Other Thoughts: If you are like me and don't really print out photos or anything, but just want a fast, reliable, black and white printer for your computer at home, then I recommend the Brother 2040 laser printer.
Glad I chose this one over "brand S." (Or "brand H" or "L.")
- Pros: Inexpensive.
Fast (using 600x600 print resolution).
Fully enclosed paper drawer.
Beautiful text quality.
So far, happily accepts cheaper 20 lb. paper without jamming or multi-feeding, unlike SOME inexpensive printers.
USB and parallel ports.
PC and Mac support for those of us who use both. (Linux drivers are also available, though I haven't tried them.)
Did I mention inexpensive and fast?
- Cons: Out-of-box settings must be tweaked for best looking graphics.
70mm Cooling fan still runs (only somewhat quietly) for 7-10 minutes AFTER unit goes into power save mode.
Sounds like a Dustbuster while printing
Yes, the paper path takes some sharp turns inside, resulting in some curling of 20 or 24 lb. paper.
Envelopes must be hand fed, and I wouldn't realy trust this thing to print on card stock.
No data cables included--make sure you have an extra, or order one with this printer. (You don't want to be stuck paying 900% markup for one at a computer/office/electronics store, do you?)
- Other Thoughts: Although I've been a loyal New Egg customer for years, I bought my Brother HL-2040 at a certain big-box office supply retailer, because I needed a new printer "right now."
None the less, I wanted to leave fellow neweggers a review because this one is underrepresented in the ratings.
With a little over 200 pages on the counter so far, this is looking like a great replacement for my bad old HP LJ1100, which had jammed its very last page.
So far, I'm incredibly impressed by the speed of this thing when set for 600 DPI. The 600X1200 setting is less impressive in speed, and I haven't seen a difference in print quality yet. (I assume that adding to the stock 8 MB of printer RAM would resolve this issue, but I can't see myself doing this if I can't see the difference in resolution.)
As a pet owner, I appreciate the fully enclosed paper tray. It should help keep animal hair from being drawn into the mechanism.
If you're wondering who makes a good home laser, it's Brother, br

Should be recalled.
- Pros: Unit worked and printed properly
out of the box. Easy setup and excellent XP driver.
- Cons: Smacks of cheap Chinese through and
through, especially the quality of the electronics. This machine is a power HOG (!), causing lights to dim noticeably and flicker even on the best circuits. It's not just annoying, but alarming.
- Other Thoughts: Brother support techs lied directly
about the power consumption problem and were evasive about providing information on the rapid failure of the toner drums occurring with this model. Shame on NewEgg for selling this printer at any price.
Yet more Chinese junk destined to occupy our landfills.
Great Laser for $70!!!
- Pros: Awesome printer!!! Saves me time and $$$ for my online auction business. Shipping USPS postage from home and all invoices GREAT BUY!! NEWEGG RULES AS USUAL!!
- Cons: NONE YET, perhaps the "starter" toner setup....
Great Value
- Pros: -cheap laser printer
-it just works -fast printing -easy installation and set up
- Cons: -no usb cable included :(
- Other Thoughts: fast shipping by new egg: ordered Wednesday evening, received Friday afternoon.
