Upgrade from your motherboard's integrated audio chipset and immerse your self in true 5.1-channel sound with the Chaintech AV-512 sound card. Whether you're watching a DVD, listening to music or playing your favorite 3D games the AV-512 provides full surround sound thanks to front, rear, center, subwoofer and rear center inputs.

There's a line-in jack for recording from music equipment, CD players and digital audio players directly to your PC. An external mic input is onboard, too, for connecting a microphone for recording sound or for video conferencing, gaming or Internet phone calls or chat. A MIDI port is available on the card as well. Connect an optional MIDI adapter cable and you can hook up your MIDI keyboard equipment or game controller.

Installation is simple and straightforward. Just seat the card in a vacant PCI card slot in your desktop and install the drivers from the included disk and you're ready to connect your speakers and enjoy high-quality audio.

5 out of 5 eggs9 yrs strong

Pros: Still working after 9 years! Does what it's suppose to.

Cons: Haven't found any in the 9 years in use.

Other Thoughts: Of course over time, this card gets outdated and will have less and less features compared to newer cards, but this has done its job and is still doing its job since day one. If you can find this card in a junk yard and need it for simple audio applications, grab it!!!

1 out of 5 eggsBLECK

Pros: Easy to install. Cheap

Cons: You get what you paid for. It ended up dragging my system down and crashing my pc on a daily basis. Tried to find updated drivers online for it and had no luck. All in all the only thing i use it for now is to play frisbie with my dog.

Other Thoughts: Don't bother with this just go with either on-board sound or buy a brand you know will work.

4 out of 5 eggsDoes the job

Pros: Needed to add a MIDI port to my Windows XP desktop. Followed the suggestion of a previous reviewer and installed the driver from http://www.cmedia.com.tw, selecting the CMI 8738 Chipset. Everything worked out smoothly. Perfect low cost solution.

Cons: The manual is misleading. It shows a couple of versions of the card, none of which matches the actual card that is in the package.

Other Thoughts: The brand of the card is Audioexcel, not Chaintech.

4 out of 5 eggsNot bleeding edge but it works

Pros: Purchased this when the onboard sound went out on my Ecs mobo. Works ok with decent speakers

Cons: It was awhile ago when i installed this but i remember the drivers being funky. I give it four stars for the driver headache i had with it , but all is well now.

Other Thoughts: Gets the job done.If your onboard sound goes try this for a replacement instead of RMA'ing your mobo as this will work just as good if not a little better. Dont expect to much for 10 bucks though.

1 out of 5 eggsCrashes with XP

Pros: None.

Cons: Spent over an hour trying to get this card installed correctly. It locks up XP when I do a reboot and had to go into safe mode, remove drivers and only then would my PC come ready. I'll be returning this product. Also, its not Chaintech as advertized. Sucks really.

1 out of 5 eggsNot worth the hassle

Pros: Newegg happily refunded my money.

Cons: First off this is listed as a Chaintech product. It's not... Instead it is some "AudioExcel" off brand. Not only did the sound cards drivers not work, they caused my system to crash every time I tried to install them. Windows XP does not recognize this card either.

Other Thoughts: cmedia.com.tw may be of some help to those using an OS other than windows XP. If you try vista, she may just catch on fire.

4 out of 5 eggsCheap, works, and Linux compatible

Pros: Cheap, works, and Linux compatible. Looks like it's the C-Media suggested CMI8738 chip application and nothing more. The board fit and finish is good. Small box, foam packing and anti-static bag, extremely standard.

Cons: The drivers I got from Windows Update were a little weird in WinXP (somebody was trying to make a simple wave device driver look cool I guess), Win2K seemed a little easier on the sensibilities.

Other Thoughts: Throw away the driver disk, Windows Update will get you signed drivers. Putting in this card fixed crashing I was getting using another creative media hardware manufacturer's card. Haven't booted with it to Linux yet, but this chip is natively supported by ALSA, so I don't anticipate any problems.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes what it's supposed to

Pros: It works

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Needed a sound card for a board without integrated sound. Works fine. May not be the smoothest install, but since when is installing hardware smooth?
