5 out of 5 eggsGreat for DOS!

Pros: If you're the kind of guy that would take out an old computer you don't use and install FreeDOS on it for a weekend of nostalgia and fun, you'll need a sound card with Sound Blaster compatibility in mind. This sound card is a great choice!

Cons: The DOS drivers (C-Media CMI8738 chipset) are not on the CD or Web site and impossible to find. Were impossible to find, but I found them on some Russian site and uploaded them to VOGONSDrivers.com, the sister site of the popular vintage computing site VOGONS. As of the date of this review, there are now three drivers on VOGONSDrivers.com for CMI8738-based cards.

Other Thoughts: Have a fun weekend!

4 out of 5 eggsWorks... just not out of the box

Pros: Functional and affordable.

Cons: Does not work out of the box. Driver installation is a pain.

In Windows 7 64 I had to go back and get the Vista-64 driver package from the Sabrent site. Abit of a chore, but it works.

In Ubuntu, I had to manually edit my ALSA configuration to load the " CMIPCI " module. Sound is adequate most of the time but there are brief Neil Armstrong moments - where the sound is either garbled or just drops out for half a second.

3 out of 5 eggsIt Works

Pros: This sound card is similar to a typical legacy sound card, except the provisions for Win7. Works on XP, Win7, and Vista (Who uses this?). Sound quality is good enough, not to physically hear the card's shortcomings. Let the high end techs squabble bout that.

Cons: This is not a high headroom card.

Other Thoughts: For the money....its a gem!

1 out of 5 eggsWorks with the right OS

Pros: Inexpensive. Easy installation and worked reliably on Windows XP 32 bit.

Cons: See comments under "other thoughts".
Wouldn't install on 64 bit Windows 7. Sabrent's support page says there is no support for 64 bit Windows 7. Had I known that, I wouldn't have bought this card. Driver "solution" on Sabrent's support page doesn't work- Vista drivers begin to install but do not complete. After Vista "install", sound card appears in Device Manager, but it is not functional.

Other Thoughts: The product's box specifically states "Windows 7 compatible". It does not differentiate whether this is 32 bit or 64 bit. It also states "Windows XP compatible", and in this case, supports both 32 bit and 64 bit XP.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: It was cheap. And by cheap, in this case, I do not mean inexpensive.

Cons: Dead on arrival. Deader than dead, actually, as it resulted in my PC failing to POST. Took the card back out and inspected it closely, as it was strangely warm: The circuit board was warm, the main chip on said board was cold. Very close inspection revealed a lousy solder job, including at least one pin that had been damaged in some way or other. I'm probably lucky that the motherboard still works!

Other Thoughts: Beware! While it is reasonable to assume that some of these boards may work quite well (there are, after all, a selection of non-1-egg ratings), the quality control is clearly lacking, and you are probably as likely to get a complete disaster as a good board.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Sound Quality For Price

Pros: Cost. Low-profile. Easy installation for mATX system.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: This device struck me as a fitting upgrade for my economy 64-bit XP desktop system. The reviews seemed relatively strong, and for $9, I took the plunge.
Card was a perfect fit in my mATX case and mATX motherboard. It does not require an additional power connection, simplifying the install process. Windows XP 64-bit quickly located and installed the driver on line. There is an included driver disc in the box - it can be easy to miss because it's one of the smaller ones about 2in across. It didn't appear to aid driver installation though. Following system restart I had no sound. Had to set new hardware to default in Windows Device Manager, then audio output kicked right in. Sabrent is the manufacturer of this card, but will appear as 'Matrox Audio' in Device Manager. Solid sound quality for games and music. Difficult to find a downside at this price.

5 out of 5 eggsREAD B4 u Buy

Pros: Inexpensive, DOS compatability for classics, Supports older OS's which is exactly what I needed for this build.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Most of the negative reviews I've read for this product are inaccurate. The card details clearly show it is not designed to support Win Vista, Win 7, or Ubuntu. It does exactly what is is supposed to and should not be faulted because some buyers have unrealistic expectations.
