The Nikon COOLPIX S10 is an interesting compact camera. It carries a 6 megapixel sensor for edge-to-edge clear, crisp detail. 10X Optical Zoom and 4X digital Zoom combine to bring you close to the action. Digital Image Stabilization is a feature to steady camera shake and allows you to capture moving images without blur-perfect for the 4 year old playing with the puppy. The camera records movies at choice speeds of 15fps, or 30fps, with sound. Light sensitivity ranges from ISO50 to ISO800, to be able to record images in any of the 23 shooting modes.

From Portrait to Fireworks to Panorama, this camera will handle everything from Museum's low lighting to snowboarding in the bright sunlight. There is an internal memory of 16MB, and you can use a storage card, the SD/MMC card. Battery power is furnished by an EN-EL5 Lithium-Ion battery, a long lasting battery for many shots before replacement. This is a great all-around camera, suitable for recording memories of family life and fun vacations.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: 10x optical zoom in a pocketable size is what attracted me to this camera in the first place. The vibration reduction works great, the panaroma helper is awesome... too many great features to list here!!!

Cons: At the far end of the zoom, auto focus takes a bit longer than I think it should (although I've never had a 10x optical zoom digital camera before)... you could lose a picture opportunity by the time it focuses.. note that this is ONLY at the max zoom level

Other Thoughts: This is my 3rd digital camera, and while I'm not a pro (or even a hard core enthusiast), I'd say this camera does everything I want it to do, and does it well. Just wish it would focus faster at high zoom settings. I don't know if this is a problem with all high zoom cameras, or just this one. It's OK for scenic shots or portraits, but action shots could be a problem. The only reason I give it 4 eggs instead of 5, is because of the slow focus at high zoom... otherwise, 5 eggs... GREAT PICTURES!!!

5 out of 5 eggsFabulous P&S Camera

Pros: This is my fourth Nikon Coolpix camera because I'm hooked on the swivel lens feature. I've only had the S10 for a few days but I think it's going to be my best point and shoot digital camera yet. It takes excellent photos and really good short movies, powers up fast, has a 10X zoom with VR stabilization that really works, compact size, exceptional battery life, very good low light performance, large, bright LCD and an affordable price.

Cons: At first I thought the size of the camera was a little too small to get a good comfortable grip and the LCD was easily smudged by my right thumb. The joystick is just a little bit small but I'm already getting good at using it. See mods below.

Other Thoughts: I took the advice of a previous reviewer and found a roll of thin neoprene at Home D, cut some pieces to shape as finger grips then contact cemeted them to the body and swivel lens at all the contact points. It works great and improves the feel a 100%. Nikon should consider offering this as an upgrade or accessory with pre-cut peel and stick pieces. I also covered the LCD with some clear guard film made for a Sony game controller to prevent scratching. The scene feature works pretty well on this camera for the situations I've tried so far and the menu navigation is easy to learn. Thanks for the great deal Newegg!

5 out of 5 eggsPocketable Big Zoom

Pros: While not a super-slim camera, it is small enough to stick in the back pocket of my jeans while walking around. Being able to pocket a camera with a 10x zoom is a big plus to me.

The swivel feature is also great. I have been able to get some shots that I wouldn't have been able to without it.

The VR technology is also very nice.

Cons: You have to get creative with your grip on the camera. If you hold it "naturally", your thumb will most likely rest on the LCD.

I wish they would have offered a bit more manual control. Shutter speed would have been nice.

Other Thoughts: Overall, a great camera. It is my third digital camera, and the best one yet in every way.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing camera

Pros: 10X Zoom!, optical IS, great low light performance, excellent image quality, amazing macro photos..all in a compact camera! What more can you ask for?

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: To date I've owned 6 digital cameras...Yes I am a camera nut and I do know what I'm talking about. If you're looking for a camera with the same abilities as the best of the large Ultra Zoom cameras but in a small package look no further!

5 out of 5 eggs7000+ exposures and still amazing

Pros: In order of greatness (IMHO)-

1: The VR feature. REAL vibration reduction, not a software sharpen feature. It's the best feature of this little cam.
2: Best shot selector. Snap 3 shots with this and you can get SHARP 1 second handheld exposures with VR activated. Try doing that with any other camera, I dare you.
3: the zoom. It's almost TOO good. 10x pocket sized zooming? yeah baby.
4: The macro is amazing. It regularly matches my 105mm VR macro lens on my SLR.
5: The swivel lens RULES.
6: The movie mode. It's decent, but the mic is really great. Best P&S mic I've ever used.
7: continuous shot mode RULES. Try it at a concert from about row 20 at 10x zoom.
8: Battery life!!! Dude. One night I took 500 shots and about 20 minutes of video. Still had battery left.

Cons: The scene modes that Nikon pushes are actually quite worthless. A week spent playing in shooting mode and figuring out what each setting does will get you much farther than relying on the scene modes.

Repeat: There is NOTHING that scene mode gives you that you cannot replicate in shooting mode by choosing the right settings. Except the cool little viewfinder lines on the architecture mode. I kinda like those...

The flash is not that great.

At the far end of the zoom, focus takes a while (about a second), especially in low light.

auto white balance is pretty washed out. To really get decent colors, you have to change the white balance for different conditions.

auto ISO just loves to go straight to ISO 800. I set this manually too, usually topping out at 400 and relying on VR for sharp shots.

Other Thoughts: I've taken over 7000 exposures with my little S10 in the past 8 months. That's nearly as many as I've put on my DSLR in a year. It is my very favorite little P&S. It continues to amaze me.

Things that have worn out: There's a little bare mark on the lower right corner where some of the silver paint has scuffed off. That's it. My joystick is great. I push to the right to say "ok" instead of pushing down. Much easier and I guess it helps resist wear judging from another review here.

5 out of 5 eggsCoolpix SWIVEL IS BACK!

Pros: I've graduated from the Coolpix 990 and will never look back. I've seen the EXILIM etc.. This S10 sucks in high resolution, CLEAR pictures with its ZOOM and VibrationReduction. I can out-take any other camera I meet. I challenge everyone and haven't lost yet. Combined with its macro capabilities this camera outperforms ALL OTHERS. SLR? what uber-geek has that kind of money? What kind of paranoia do you carry around with a $1500 SLR ? This camera is the best at capturing kids on rides, running and at 300' PLUS. It's INCREDIBLE how you can pull in the shots you never thought possible.

Cons: too small. ergonomically still a little square. It could use some "soft touch" areas to make easier to one hand it.
I covered mine with lens protector and that helped a lot.

Other Thoughts: Biggest advantage over other non-swivels? the ENCLOSED Lens. There is no expanding cone to get damaged!
I don't Miss manual mode at ALL. There are two "hot buttons" on the lens which set up your VR and your "people shot", regardless of what mode you WERE in.
New Panorama mode is priceless. A little grainy at ISO 800, but what camera isn't ? The capabilities of this camera make people forget that there are actually limitations to light and light gathering. After a while of using this camera, you almost think it will shoot through the lens cap in near darkness.. but seriously S10 is a sweetspot of capabilities, with EXTRAORDINARY long AND macro expertise.

4 out of 5 eggsRexTalon

Pros: - It's 10x zoom is a great feature for scenic shots. - It has a nice big screen. - It's video mode is one of the best I've used. - The sound in videos is pretty good quality. - It transitions nicely from dim to light areas. - It isn't a battery hog. - It performs nicely when placed on a tripod or stable surface at night.

Cons: - The "joystick" you use to select options wears out fast. Mine is going out and I'm worried that it won't work at all soon. - I wish there were more flash and macro options. It does give you like 6 flash options but you'll only ever use 3 (flash, no flash, and twilight flash) because the others don't operate very well. - Forget using macro at night or in mediocre lighting. The flash on the side of the lens makes it difficult to light things correctly in macro mode. - Forget using flash on anything more than 6 feet away.

Other Thoughts: If you want to use the flash in macro mode, try putting a regular piece of white paper over the flash to diffuse it. I do this often, which isn't the best solution, but it's better than having your photo completely washed out. I wish they'd include a half light feature or something.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat camera

Pros: The best features: 10X optical zoom in this size camera, excellent picture quality, rotating lens/body (candid photos), video with sound and with zoom, great battery life. The delay between pressing shutter and photo is good; it changes depending on light conditions. With outside light it is almost immediate. Much, much improved over my old camera. Vista OS recognizes the camera too.

Cons: USB 1.0 but it's not bad - can connect flash card using card reader at 2.0.

Other Thoughts: Many friends are very impressed with the camera and photo quality. I could go into sales with this one!

5 out of 5 eggsgreat camera

Pros: The 10X zoom is great especially for a camera this size. Focus and vibration reduction work well but need decent light. Takes excellect photos. Video is good, includes sound. Last 2 seconds of sound not included, as noted before. Menus and operation are pretty intuitive and easy to navigate. Battery life is very good. I got an extra battery but haven't really needed it.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Great camera. Friends have been impressed with it. I may be helping Nikon sell more of these.
This replaces an old Casio digital camera. I also have a Nikon film camera and probably won't be using it too much now. Very happy customer.
